One person dead, two injured after building collapse in Chipley
One person is dead and two more are injured after a building collapsed during a demolition project in Chipley on Monday.
Jamie White, public information officer for the Chipley Police Department, told the News Journal that the collapsed building is located on the city’s Main Street, at the corner of U.S. 77 and U.S. 90. She said the building had been under construction and demolition crews were working on it when the roof collapsed Monday about 4 p.m.
White said there were "several" people trapped in the building, but as of 6 p.m. all had been removed from the building.
One person was transported to a hospital via ambulance, another was transported to a hospital via helicopter and a third was pronounced dead at the scene.
The identity of the deceased is not being released pending notification of next of kin.
The building previously housed Hays Barbershop, which closed years ago, and Sapp's Jewelers, which had relocated.
Chipley is in Washington County, located in the Panhandle about 50 miles north of Panama City.
