Religion Bulletin: Christian army leaves Europe to 'rescue' Holy Land

Washington County News

RELIGIOUS EVENTS IN HISTORY

On Aug. 15, 1096, an army of as many as 100,000 set out from Europe toward the Holy Land to "rescue" Jerusalem from the Muslim Turks in what becomes known as the First Crusade. Nearly a year earlier, Pope Urban II called for Christians to bring aid to Christians in the East who were under attack by the Turks at the Council of Clermont. Urban's call to arms was met with enthusiastic support across all social classes in Western Europe. The crusaders eventually reached Jerusalem in June 1099 and the city was taken by assault on July 7, 1099.
