Target stores will close by 9 p.m. local time starting March 18, the retailer announced. Target will dedicate a shopping hour to vulnerable guests.

All Target stores will close no later than 9 p.m. local time starting Wednesday, the retailer announced.

The Minneapolis-based retailer is one of the last major companies to cut hours in response to the coronavirus or COVID-19 to give staff "additional time for cleaning and restocking each day," the company said in a news release. Walmart reduced hours of its 24-hour stores on Sunday as have many grocery stores.

Target stores that regularly close earlier than 9 p.m. will continue to close at their normal time, the company said. Updated store hours are posted at Target.com and in stores.

Also starting Wednesday, the retailer is dedicating an hour each week for the elderly and those with underlying health concerns – who are the most most vulnerable to COVID-19 – to shop.

Target's more than 1,800 stores nationwide will "reserve the first hour of shopping each Wednesday at stores nationwide for vulnerable guests," the company said, adding it is "encouraging other guests to plan their shopping trips around this timeframe."

Dollar General also is dedicating time for senior shoppers.

"Families are counting on Target for critical supplies during this challenging time, and we'll continue to do all that we can to keep our stores open," Target CEO Brian Cornell said in a statement. "We'll also maintain limits on select products and would ask guests to purchase only what they need so there's enough supply to accommodate this increased demand."

Other stores have announced they are closing all locations. Macy's and Nordstrom are the latest to announce all locations are closed. Apple, which previously announced its stores would be closed until March 27, said Tuesday stores are closed until further notice.
