A woman says a homeless man assaulted her Friday in a fight over an Uber.

The 35-year-old woman, who police have not identified, told officers that she hailed a driver from the online, ride-sharing company. The Uber arrived at her position, just west of the Akron (Ohio) Innerbelt on Thornton Street, around 6:30 p.m.

As she climbed into the backseat, a local man she recognized as homeless got in the front. A dispute over whose ride ensued.

“She gets in the back seat. The suspect gets in the front seat,” explained Lt. Rick Edwards, a spokesman for the police department. “She tells the Uber driver, ‘I called, not him.’”

At that point, the man police have identified as 36-year-old Earron Weems got out and opened the woman’s door. He allegedly grabbed her purse in an assault, but could only make off with the wallet, Edwards said.

No one was injured. Police say Weems was last seen on foot heading west on Thornton Street. Anyone with information is asked to call the Akron Detective Bureau at 330-375-2490.
