Walt Disney World opened to the public on Oct. 1, 1971 and has grown exponentially.

Walt Disney World is 48-years-old today. The park opened to the public on Oct. 1, 1971.

On top of four parks, two water parks, more than 25 resort hotels, and the Disney Springs complex, there are upcoming expansions, Fox35 reports.

In the near future, Epcot will receive a full makeover with new rides, restaurants and other elements for park-goers. The Epcot transformation includes the new 'Guardian's of the Galaxy' coaster, a 'Mary Poppins' attraction and Moana: Journey of Water, an interactive ride based on the film, said Fox35.

Other expansions include Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, a hotel that brings guests into space during their stay. And Star Wars: Rose of the Resistance, an attraction that puts riders in the middle of a showdown between the ‘Resistance’ and the ‘First Order.’
