Live Oak Baptist Church will host its annual Back to School Bash Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Another school supplies drive will be held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pals Park in Chipley.

WASHINGTON COUNTY - Just in time for the start of school, one church is hosting a fair to get students geared up for a successful school year.

Live Oak Baptist Church, 5211 Millers Ferry Road in Vernon, is hosting the 6th Annual Back to School Bash from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. No admission fee or registration is required.

"A lot of people are struggling now," said event coordinator Susie Sewell. "This gives them an opportunity to get supplies, clothes, food ... and have a fun day before school starts."

In addition to the school supplies giveaway, several vendors will be on hand to provide information and services - such as immunization shots, dental exams, hair cuts, and HIV rapid testing. In terms of entertainment, there will be a water slide, helicopter, pirate ship, Smokey the Bear, food and other kids activities.

Sewell said the event normally draws and assists about 400 individuals. This year, as the impact of the hurricane is still fresh in the air, she said she is unsure how many will attend.

However, no matter the number, the bash is geared at achieving a single goal: spreading awareness about the love of Jesus Christ.

"It is an opportunity to learn about Jesus," she said. "Yes, there is school supplies, fun, and meeting those needs of people ... (but) we're able to tell people about Jesus - that is our basic concern."

About four miles off of State Road 79 in New Hope, Live Oak Church is located in a place convenient for people living in Washington, Holmes, and Bay counties. Another school supplies drive will be held today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pals Park in Chipley.
