WAUSAU - Today, Wausau will celebrate its heritage with the 50th Annual Wausau Fun Day and Possum Festival.

The free family-friendly event kicks off in historic Wausau at 10 a.m. and features a parade, entertainment, food, vendors and the possum auction.

Out of roots that celebrate the possum as a source of food during the Great Depression, the traditional - and rather unconventional - festival is the city's largest event of the year and is a customary go-to for politicians who vie to be the highest bidder at the auction, often unloading thousands of dollars on a single possum.

The funds from the event go toward the volunteer fire department and other community-based needs.
