Thirteen West Alabama programs advanced to the seventh annual AHSAA Super Regional Volleyball Tournament Championships.
Play commences Thursday for both the South Super Regional at Mongtomery’s Cramton Bowl Multiplex and the North Super Regional at Hunstville’s Von Braun Center.
Classes 2A, 3A, 5A and 6A play begins Thursday and Classes 1A, 4A and 7A begin play Friday. The top four finishers in each classification from both regional sites advance to the 48th annual AHSAA Elite Eight State Championships at Birmingham’s CrossPlex next week.
In Class 6A, both Northridge and Hillcrest advanced to the South Super Regional. The Jaguars defeated the Patriots in five sets to win the Area 7 tournament on Monday night.
“This was our goal was to go to regionals and we made it,” Northridge sophomore Mary Morgan Formby said.
Hillcrest faces Wetumpka, the Area 5 champion, on Court 1 Thursday at 2 p.m. Northridge, making its first appearance since 2013, faces Area 5 runner-up Stanhope Elmore on Court 2 at 3:30 p.m.
“This is huge,” Northridge coach Erin Heck said. “Some (players) have been around this program since elementary school or middle school, so the fact they were able to work their way up and get to this level and be able to beat their biggest rivals is great.”
In Class 5A, Area 5 winner Central and Area 5 runner-up Bibb County both advanced to the South Super Regional. Central faces Area 7 runner-up Munford on Court 3 at 10:15 a.m. and Bibb County takes on Area 7 winner Sylacauga on Court 6 at 11:30 a.m.
In Class 3A, Holt and Hale County advanced to Thursday’s South Super Regional. Area 7 runner-up Holt faces Area 5 champion Montgomery Academy on Court 1 at 9 a.m. Area 7 champion Hale County takes on Area 5 runner-up Prattville Christian on Court 2 at 10:15 a.m.
In Class 4A, American Christian Academy, Northside and Greensboro moved on to the South Super Regional and Fayette County advanced to North Super Regional.
After moving up to Class 4A this season, ACA beat Northside in three sets to win the Area 7 championship. Greensboro won the Area 6 title and Fayette County finished runner-up in Area 12.
Northside takes on Area 5 winner Elmore County on Court 1 Friday at 9 a.m., Greensboro faces Area 8 runner-up Montevallo on Court 6 and Fayette County plays Area 10 winner Jacksonville on Court 5 in Huntsville. ACA faces Area 6 runner-up Holtville on Court 2 at 10:15 a.m.
“Our goal this time going into regionals is not to crumble the first game and just go from there. Never play down and play to our level,” ACA senior Maggie Sullivan said.
In Class 1A, Area 7 winner South Lamar, Area 7 runner-up Berry and Area 4 runner-up Linden all moved on to the South Super Regional. Berry faces Area 5 champion Isabella on Court 3 at 10:15 a.m. Linden faces Area 2 winner Pleasant Home on Court 3 and South Lamar plays Area 5 runner-up Maplesville on Court 6 at 11:30 a.m.
