CHIPLEY – Washington Board of County Commissioners is aiming to combining Code Enforcement and Animal Control with municipalities that fall under the county’s comprehensive plan.
During a regular session meeting March 14, commissioners tasked County Administrator Jeff Massey with researching the costs and rules of combining the services and designating the county to serve as both offices for some municipalities.
Massey is expected to return to the board next month with his findings.
In other business, the board approved a measure for the county to take ownership of the Vernon Library building from the City of Vernon. The takeover comes as a result of maintenance issues, according to officials. The county will only take ownership of the building; the Washington County Library System will still maintain the library itself.
Grants for $16,583 in Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) were approved to purchase eight complete sets of bunker gear for new firefighters joining the rosters of county fire departments.
Also at the meeting, County Attorney Matt Fuqua was tasked with writing a Request for Proposals for auditing services for the Clerk of Courts office in order to make sure the county is receiving fair market pricing for services.
County Engineer Cliff Knauer updated commissioners on the finalization of grant applications for submittal to FDOT programs Small County Road Assistance Program (SCRAP) for Brickyard Road, Small Community Outreach Program (SCOP) for Greenhead Road and County Incentive Grant Program (CIGP) for Hutchinson Road. The county will learn in August if the grants have been approved by the state.
Also, the application for a 319 Grant, which is a water quality grant from Department of Environmental Protection, for Williams Road has been submitted, officials stated. The grant is a 60/40 match grant with the county’s share of $240,000 being matched with in-kind work in the form of earthwork and grading.
