VERNON -- At a regular meeting Tuesday, Vernon City Council scheduled a public hearing to approve an ordinance extending term limits.
The extension, if approved, will synchronize the city's elections with most other municipal and county elections held in November.
The public hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5 at City Hall, 2808 Yellow Jacket Drive.
The council also made a motion to hold a public hearing on revisions to the city charter. A date was not set for the public hearing, however, city officials said the council will discuss the revisions at the Feb. 5 meeting and will likely hold the public hearing in March.
"I look forward to the public hearing to see how the public turns out," Vernon Mayor Tina Sloan said. "I hope the public will come out and will respond because that's the purpose of having a public hearing and so the public will come out and ask questions."
To receive a copy of the pending, revised charter, contact the clerk's office at City Hall. The document will be available at the public hearing, as well.
In other business, the council unanimously approved the hiring of Tracy Walker as City Clerk, at $15.86 an hour, and Christina Barnett as Deputy Clerk, at $10.50 an hour, both for a 90-day probationary period.
Also, the council approved $1,825 for fire station radios.
Vernon City Council meets at 7 p.m. on the first and third Monday of the month at City Hall.
