HOLMES COUNTY — Holmes County Board of County Commissioners approved a measure to get a new voting system up and running in the Oct. 13 regular meeting.

Supervisor of Elections Debbie Wilcox Morris asked commissioners to approve a lease purchase agreement for the county to acquire new voting software and equipment so election staff may begin training on it.

The county will take on the financial commitment before it receives the first installment of $107,000 in Help America Vote Act grant funding over the next five years slated to cover the new voting system.

Commissioners voted to accept a proposal from the Jones Phillips firm to take on housing rehabilitation projects funded by the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG).

In items on road improvements, the commission adopted resolutions to begin improvements on County Road 183A, C.R. 181, Tobe Retherford Road, Thomas Drive and Deacon Road in the near future. David Melvin Engineering reported work on C.R. 177 is set to wrap in the next 45 days.

The next regular county commission meeting will be Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. The board approved a meeting time around the holidays for Tuesday, Dec. 8 at 9 a.m. It will be the only commissioner meeting held in December.
