VERNON - The Northwest Florida Reception Center K-9 Team made short work of locating a suspect wanted in connection with a vehicle theft Saturday, June 20.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office activated the team shortly after 8 p.m. to help apprehend a suspect believed to have stolen a vehicle from the Dollar General store in Vernon.

K-9 team members Sgt. Derek Kirkland, Sgt. J. T. Mann, Ofc. Dylan Lee, Capt. Jonathan Barber and K-9s "Jack" and "Liza" arrived on scene and received information that the suspect, Jacob Isaac Martin, had been spotted approximately a half mile from the crime scene.

The team moved to Martin's last known location and was able to establish a track, apprehending Martin less than a mile away before turning him over to WCSO.

"Our local K-9 teams are a valuable asset to our law enforcement agencies," said Washington County Sheriff Bobby Haddock. "We are grateful for their assistance."

NWFRC Warden David Maddox states the K-9 team is also a valued asset to the correctional institute.

"K-9 programs statewide assist local law enforcement agencies with felon apprehension, locating missing persons and locating and providing aid to persons in distress," said Warden Maddox. "They are a very valued member of the facilities and the communities in which they serve."
