Vernon looking forward to coming football season
VERNON – Vernon held its Media Day last Friday, followed by the annual Blue and Orange Scrimmage before a good-sized crowd. Afterward, while the players and fans enjoyed hot dogs and hamburgers prepared by the Vernon Quarterback Club, Coach Russ Rogers looked at the upcoming football season.
“We’ve got nine out of 11 defensive guys back so we’re going to be pretty good on defense,” the second-year head coach said. “Offensively, our offensive line’s all back, but all the receivers are gone, so it looks like we’re going to have to run the ball more than last year.
“We’re still coming out of the spread and we’re still working on our passing game. You can’t win football without throwing the ball.” Vernon worked mostly passing plays at the scrimmage.
Rogers said the district would be a challenge as usual.
“It’s a really, really tough district and all the teams have gotten better,” Rogers said. “There are a couple new coaches out there so we’re going to have our work cut out for us.”
The Yellow Jackets have their fall game this coming Friday in Vernon against Bozeman and they open the regular season on Sept. 5 at Chipley.
