Hornets edge Yellow Jackets in rain-shortened game

VERNON – The Cottondale Hornets (5-5) were in the lead against the Vernon Yellow Jackets (5-5) during the first half, 8-6, before getting rained out.

The Yellow Jackets’ John Johnson scored the first touchdown of the game on a 24-yard pass reception with 6:05 left in the first quarter, making the score 6-0.

Jacob Herring of the Hornets scored the next touchdown from two yards out with 7:36 left in the first half, and also scored the two-point conversion making the score 8-6.

The Yellow Jackets were at their 25-yard line with 6:25 left in the first half when the game was called to a halt due to heavy rains.

Neither team qualified for the playoffs, with Cottondale eliminated last week by a loss to Graceville, and Vernon being eliminated in the three-way shootout with South Walton and Baker.
