Mosley girls beat Chiles
Boys fall to Timberwolves
LYNN HAVEN - Katie Scott's months of practice made her perfect Thursday afternoon.
The result of dedicating herself to tennis during the past year was clear during a 6-0, 6-0 win over Chiles' Lisa Feng at No. 1 singles in a District 2-3A match.
Her doubles' win helped spark Mosley's girls (4-6, 3-5) to a 5-2 win. Chiles' girls fell to 1-6, 0-5.
Mosley's boys (5-2-1, 3-3-1) however, weren't able to overcome a two-match deficit after losing both doubles matches and fell 4-3 to Chiles (5-4, 4-1).
Scott teamed with Hillary Maddox to win 6-1, 6-2 in doubles. From there, the junior easily won her eighth match of the season.
"I was able to come up and volley and take a lot of shorter shots," Scott said. "I tried to do a lot harder short-handed shots because she was a weaker player. Once I saw open shots I put it away."
Scott works with a private instructor three times a week and practices against tougher competition. At Mosley, she hits against sophomore Adam Decker, who played in the boys state tournament last year.
"She works hard," Mosley coach Vernon Barth said. "Harder than most people know. She goes to camps over the summer.
She's continuously working on her game. She's undersized compared to some of her opponents, but that doesn't intimidate her or stop her."
To Scott, however, there's a method behind her practice schedule and it's helped her rise to the No. 1 singles spot for the second straight year.
"I'm always up for a challenge," Scott said. "I like to play against harder people."
Maddox followed Scott's singles win with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Alexandra Groom. Megan Sizmur and Lauren Windholtz won at Nos. 4 and 5, 8-0 and 8-6 respectively.
"That Chiles team, in the past has given us a lot of fits," Barth said. "They exceeded my expectations today with how they came out and played. I expected it to be a lot closer than it was."
Decker won his No. 1 singles match 6-4, 6-0 over Brandon Cummings. Decker's doubles partner Alex Ionescu took care of Micah Andrews 6-1, 6-1.
Decker and Ionescu lost to Cummings and Andrews 7-6, (7-1), 6-4. Caleb Windholtz was the other Mosley win, 6-2, 6-7 (7-9), 10-5 over Garret Fontenot.
"They lost a heartbreaker," Barth said of the boys squad. "I really felt they had this won. We had a couple matches that really could have gone either way and they both went the wrong way for us.
"I feel like when we get a chance to play them again in districts it'll go the way we need it to. They learned a lot from this match today."
