Holmes County's McGowan signs baseball scholarship with Troy
BONIFAY — Holmes County’s Jeremy McGowan is on his way to Troy, McGowan signing a baseball scholarship with the Trojans on Monday afternoon at Holmes County High School.
“I have a chance to earn a starting spot,” McGowan said. “Basically I’ll be playing pitcher and outfield.”
McGowan has accumulated impressive statistics at Holmes County since coming over from Graceville for his freshman year.
As a freshman he hit .350 with 18 RBI, and as a sophomore batted .351 with 17 RBI. His second year he went 5-1 on the mound with a 1.55 ERA and struck out 32 in 31 2-3 innings.
Last season, McGowan had a .369 average with three home runs, 21 RBI and eight stolen bases and was 4-1 as a pitcher with 33 strikeouts in 31 2-3 innings and a 2.87 ERA.
Holmes County baseball coach Ron Dixon said that McGowan attended a camp at Troy and immediately was spotted by the coaching staff.
“They said they saw what they wanted to see,” Dixon said.
Dixon added that McGowan’s scholarship will cover half of his college expenses, the other half taken care of by an academic scholarship.
“If that doesn’t inspire you in the classroom nothing else will,” Dixon said.
