Prep roundup (March 21): Bay baseball shuts out Troy team

In softball, Blountstown victorious

PANAMA CITY - Bay defeated Charles Henderson (Troy, Ala.) 1-0 on Friday in high school baseball as James Wynn pitched a four-hitter with seven strikeouts. Bay is 9-2, the Alabama school ranked in Class 5A, 16-4.

Reid Wynn had a one-out double in the bottom of the sixth inning, and courtesy runner David Emory scored on a bunt by Deric Burke.

The Tornadoes had five hits.

Bay plays a District 2-4A game Monday at East Gadsden.

Rutherford 6, Charles Henderson 4
SPRINGFIELD
Alex Beranek got a key strikeout to halt a rally by Charles Henderson (Troy, Ala.) rally in the fifth inning, and allowed no hits or walks, while striking out three, in a 2 1/3-inning relief appearance for Rutherford.

Beranek entered in the fifth inning after Charles Henderson had scored three runs to narrow the gap to 5-4. Starter Michael Harrington was the winning pitcher, allowing six hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Harrington had two doubles, Tyler Helms had two singles and two RBIs, and Chris Burkett had two RBIs for Rutherford.

Helms had the key hit for the Rams, a two-run single in the third inning that pushed the lead to 5-1.
Rutherford (9-3) hosts Pope John Paul from Tennessee at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

PDL 5, Malone 4
PONCE de LEON
Ryan Varner was the winning pitcher for the Pirates, who rallied from a 4-1 deficit to improve to 10-2. Caylon Friend had a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to cap the rally, and Joe Arant pitched the seventh for a save.

Jesse Paulk was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Billy Johnson was 2 for 4 for PDL.

Altha 7, Marianna 2
MARIANNA
Ninth-rated Class 2A Altha improved to 13-2 with its sixth straight win as Keith Kirkpatrick pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts.

Tony Golden was 3 for 4 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored for the Wildcats. Jake Edenfield was 3 for 4 with an RBI, Josh McIntosh 3 for 5 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs and Tad Scott had a two-run homer.

Ryne Elliott had a two-run single for the Bulldogs, 10-3.
Altha had a 2A showdown at unbeaten Bozeman tonight at 6:30 p.m.

Mosley 4, Chiles 2
LYNN HAVEN
Molsey and Tallahassee Chiles combined for more action in the one extra inning they played than in the seven before.
Tied 1-1 after seven innings, Chiles started the eighth with a solo home run to take a 2-1 lead. Mosley pitcher

Justin Hess got the Dolphins out of the inning without any more damage.

Jason Robbins walked to start the bottom of the eighth and was replaced by pinch runner Hunter Mann. Hess then doubled to score Mann and tie the game at 2-2.

Clay Davis followed with a two-run home run to win the game.

Mosley is 8-4 overall and 4-2 in District 2-5A.

Hess struck out 10 and allowed three hits and two earned runs. From the plate he went 3 for 4. Taye Larry went 2 for 4 with a run scored.

The Dolphins play Charles Henderson from Troy, Ala., today at 3:30 p.m.

Softball
Arnold 14, East Gadsden 0

QUINCY
Freshman Michelle Ostrovsky pitched her first career no-hitter and had six strikeouts to give Arnold (10-3, 5-2 District 2-4A) a five-inning run rule victory over East Gadsden.

Lauren Butherus went 2 for 3 with three RBIs, Bella Camperlengo had a triple and two RBI for the Marlins. Monica Seal, Tia Burgess and Ostrovsky each had an RBI.

Arnold hosts Graceville on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Blountstown 14, FCO 4
BLOUNTSTOWN
Blountstown had 13 hits against Franklin County to improve to 12-5. Brittany Griffin was the winning pitcher. Ashley Whitfield had a three-run homer to end the game by the run rule and also had a double and single and five RBIs.

Selina Williams was 3 for 3 with two doubles, two RBIs and scored two runs. Cherie Hires had a single and double and Kaitlin Peacock had two singles and three RBIs.

Blountstown plays at Liberty County on Monday.

Altha 10, Bozeman 0
SAND HILLS
Bozeman fell to 1-3 in District 2-2A and 1-14 overall. The Bucks were limited to singles by Lacee Rudd, Amber Rowan and Ashleigh Benefield.

Bozeman plays at Graceville today.

Wewahitchka 7, Port St. Joe 1
WEWAHITCHKA
Sam Rich was at it again.

With a three-run cushion after the first inning, Rich struck out 11 Port St. Joe Lady Tiger Sharks and allowed just three hits in a battle of two of the top area softball teams.

Rich, who went 2 for 3 and hit a solo home run, improved to 10-2. The Lady Gators are 13-2. Hillary Chapman went 2 for 4 with a two-run home run, and Sam Wade had a two-run single.

Port St. Joe is 15-2.

Wewa plays at Holmes County on Monday.

Rutherford 9, Lincoln 2

SPRINGFIELD
Gina Mathis was the winning pitcher and had two singles for Rutherford, 5-6. Also with two hits were Tara Daneau, Kirsten Thompson and Kayla Gainous.

Brandon Howell tossed a complete game, allowing seven hits and striking out eight, in a game against Spring Break visitors from Illinois.

Brock Bishop had a single, double and two RBIs for PDL (9-2).

Rams advance four

CRESTVIEW
Chris Weaver won the 238-pound class leading four Rutherford qualifiers for the upcoming sectional meet. Weaver had a 370-pound bench and 260-pound clean and jerk for a 630 total.

Nick Smith was second at 183 pounds with 340-240, 580 and Chris Reed second at 154 with 290-230, 520. Placing third was Patrick Sermons at 238 with 315, 295, 610.

The sectional meet is March 31 at Fort Walton Beach.

Softball
Riverdale (Tenn.) 2, Wewa 0
WEWAHITCHKA
Samantha Rich struck out 10 and allowed four hits against the 11th-best team in the country, according to Rivals.com.

Wewahitchka managed just three hits, all singles, by Hillary Chapman, Chelsey Pitts and Rich.
