Holmes County falls to Jay in opener

BONIFAY – Jay jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back, beating Holmes County 39-6 in Bonifay.

Stephen Brabham ran in for the first Jay touchdown early in the first quarter, and Rush Hendricks scored the second touchdown to make it 14-0 Royals to end the first quarter. Hunter Boutwell ran 30 yards to make it 20-0, and Jay recovered a fumble for a touchdown to make it 26-0 at halftime.

The Royals kept control throughout the second half, building up a 39-0 lead, including a 60-yard touchdown pass to Boutwell, until Gerald Anderson scored on two-yard pass to give Holmes County its only score as the game wound down.

There were defensive highlights for the Blue Devils, as Tim Benton made an interception and C.J. Lee recovered a fumble, but Jay was simply too strong for the home team, playing its first game under new Coach Carlin Martin.

Holmes County hosts Freeport this Friday.

Hey, 80s fan. You talk like you think the superintendent is paid just to float your football program to victory. There are 6 other schools in the county you know, so he may be a little to busy to micromanage your little football team. Holmesmania we are so glad you put your 2 cents worth in. Those of us from Westville know the connections. I'm sure you don't.

Is Martin the issue or is Griffin the issue? It is not fair to Martin to put him down this early. Also, Griffin was not the only one that had a hand in the decision to hire Martin.

I actually stated in a forum on holmescountyflorida . com that Martin would be the coach before the school board had met. How in the heck did I know what the decision was before the school board even met?

Jay beat Bonifay by 33. Vernon beat Jay by 21. Is Vernon going to beat Bonifay by 50?

HCHS has talent. This year we have good talent. We need to rebuild some pride. This team is soft in a lot of ways and out of shape. The talent is there and they are very capable of being in each game and winning. I agree with biggest fan. Instead of writing off this season, 2 games in, lets support the students in everything they do, not just football. As far as Griffin has to go, 80's fan, it sounds like you have a personal reason. This team could go to state and you would still say he has to go. He has done a lot of good. How about looking at that from time to time. I would rather keep someone in there with some good in him than to have someone that is only running becasue they got mad about something. That's what is wrong with our county now, people vote in these individuals with hidden agendas.

Al and Willard and the tandem I would like to see again. Actually scratch that. I wouldn't want to see them, just listen to them.

I think our boys will win against Freeport this Friday. We are only 1 game into the season and they are still ajusting to a new offense. You always start the season out 10 and 0. There is always the possibility of 9 and 1. As a dad, I encourage all of you to encourage our boys when you see them. They have a long road ahead of them and who knows, with a little help from you, their fans, you never know what will happen. No one wants to win worse than they do. Instead of looking at every ball game, lets wait till the end of the season to make our judgements. I know that every one of you want whats best for our players. Thats why we have such a wonderful town. We may dissagree, but we all support our kids. Call me the Blue Devils biggest fan.

The applause you may be hearing in Holmes County is coming from us. Thank you for taking him off of our hands here at MHS. The mood and outlook for our players and fans took a major upswing when we got the news that you were taking him. Love this site by the way. I will recommend this to all my friends. Sorry bluedevils, but thanks.

They should make the playoffs this year. The other schools are really down in talent from what they usually have.

First of all the band has been down for several years now. The same goes for football. Coach Martin, a former Blue Devil football player, is trying to build the program and bring back tradition. It wasn't broke overnight and will not get fixed overnight. The same with the band. So all of you that want to sit back and criticize need to think about that fact that these are high school students. Also, back off of Mr. Griffin! We unfortunately don't have the pool of talent that other schools have. That isn't Griffin's fault. Give the programs time and just support them.

If anything needs to be rebuilt it is the band, and it is not the kids fault.
