High-flying performances highlight Panhandle Championships (See Results)

Niceville wins team title, Arnold second

LYNN HAVEN — Dominating wrestling performances ruled the Panhandle Championships on Saturday.

Niceville secured its third straight team title in the event on the strength of solid showings in the semifinals. Eight Eagles won semifinal matches and five earned championships to pace them to 225 points. That outpaced runner-up Arnold (179) and third-place Mosley (152½) in the showcase staged at the Jim Redfern Gymnasium.

The tournament also featured impressive resumes from several individuals, including Arnold’s Doug Miner, who ran his record to 28-0 in the 119-pound weight class, and Bozeman’s Brandon Reyes.

Niceville coach Morrie Geselter was pleased at how Niceville produced, especially given three of his wrestlers played football deep into the postseason and still are getting into wrestling shape.

“We couldn’t have done much better,” Geselter said. “We had eight wrestlers in the semis and they all won. Then we had five championships and that was tremendous. We won 13 of our final matches tonight and that’s a great accomplishment.”

Niceville’s champions were Taylor Nixon (130), David Jones (140), Hayden Meyer (152), Brock Lamb (160) and Nate Hartley (171). Jones shared most outstanding wrestler honors with Milton’s Corey Menefee.

The five individual crowns were by far the most of any of the 17 teams in the field. Arnold and Milton were next with two apiece. Miner shared titlist honors with teammate Joel Ensminger (112).

Miner’s impressive start is underscored by how he dispatched Mosley’s Kyle Angove in the final. It was by pin in 57 seconds. He’s also pinned each of his other 27 opponents.

Miner overpowered Angove early and imposed his will to notch the quick fall. He has done that with many opponents, and credited a strenuous weight program at Arnold for helping him hone his style.

“It’s about being physical and getting lots of takedowns,” Miner said. “I think a big difference is the weights, but also our intensity and the way we’ve been coached this year. Everyone, including me, is more in tune.”

Arnold coach Jeff Skipper said Miner has crafted himself into a formidable wrestler with his technique.

“He’s strong and he has good hips, which really helps him,” Skipper said. “And he’s a year older and better.”

Miner is only a sophomore, and said he won’t be jolted if he loses a match or two since he lost many last season. Reyes, who won his second tournament title in Bay County this season, also is a sophomore and sports a 27-2 mark.

Reyes pinned Mosley’s Dylan Humphrey in 5:34 to win at 103 pounds. He had Bozeman’s lone title and won all three of his tournament matches by pin.

Mosley had one championship as well. Ryan Newsome defeated Dan Dunwald of South Walton by default at 135.
