Mosley girls advance to first golf regional (See Scores)

LYNN HAVEN — Mosley girls golf coach Todd Harless admitted the Dolphins’ scores were higher than expected on Monday. But it didn’t matter.

Mosley finished second in the 18-hole District 2-2A tournament at Panama Country Club with a score of 408. Tallahassee Chiles won with a 378, but again, the 30-stroke defeat didn’t matter. The top three teams advanced to next week’s regional tournament, including Lake City Columbia (411).

Monday marked the first time Mosley had qualified for regionals.

“We worked hard to get here and I’m proud of the girls,” Harless said. “It’s been real fun because you can see the competitiveness come out.”

Harless told his team that there is much to work on heading into the nine-team regional in Tallahassee on Oct. 27. Scores as high as Monday’s, with several golfers above their averages, likely won’t result in advancing to state.

Sophomore Courtney Webb led Mosley after struggling to an 89, 13 strokes higher than her average. Ginny Shipman was next with 102, Hillary Maddox 105 and Ashley Ingram 112.

There were only two scores lower than Webb. District champion Carlton Kuhlo of Chiles had a 76 and teammate Haley Hill scored 87.

Harless said PCC can be a difficult course to play on, despite it being Mosley’s home venue. The increased pressure of districts and the fact Mosley had never competed in a match there due to rainouts made for a challenge.

“It is difficult and the greens were rolling,” Harless said. “Plus, it was a little cold.”

He added there would be no margin for error next week. Only the top two teams and top two individuals not on qualifying squads advance to the state tournament.

On Monday, the top three players not on a qualifying team also moved on. Those were Tallahassee Lincoln’s Elaine Lee (90) and Lindsey Duncan (110) and Tallahassee Leon’s Elleni Gavalas (91).

The Region 1-2A tournament takes place at the Golf Club at Summerbrooke. Mosley and the eight other teams and nine individuals will have a practice round on Monday.
