VERNON — The Vernon Yellow Jackets pulled out a fourth-quarter win when quarterback Tristan Porter called his own number with less than seven minutes to play in the game.
Porter scrambled for three big plays in a 55-yard drive, including two first downs, then found the end zone from 12 yards out to give the Yellow Jackets (2-3) a 13-8 lead in their Homecoming game against the Cottondale Hornets (4-2).
Porter then added the PAT to give the Yellow Jackets their 15-8 win.
Vernon got on the board first when Brandon Malloy scored from 3 yards out. Aaron Bowers kick was good and the Yellow Jackets were up 7-0 with 42 seconds left in the first quarter.
Cottondale returned the favor in the final seconds of the half, taking possession of the ball on downs at the Vernon 37. Quarterback Justin Lipford connected with Shaundre McAroy on a 33-yard pass to score, then Norris Calhoun added the PAT to give the Hornets a 8-7 lead going into the half.
After a scoreless third quarter, Porter was able to get the Yellow Jackets in the lead, and the Hornets were not able to get back into the end zone. Two Cottondale passes were picked off by Vernon players Julian Silas and Jacquel Watson to stymie the Hornet’s final minutes of play.
Vernon hosts Holmes County High School next Friday while Cottondale travels to South Walton.
