Ponce de Leon advances with win over Freeport

PONCE DE LEON — The Ponce de Leon Lady Pirates (22-3) advanced to the District 1-2A finals with a 45-30 win over Freeport (12-15) Saturday night. The Lady Pirates will play Jay in the district finals.

PDL jumped out to a 12-5 first-quarter lead before Freeport tried to make a game of it. The Lady Bulldogs closed to trail just 20-16 before baskets by Jasmine Flock and Ashley Harper gave the Lady Pirates a 25-16 halftime lead.

From there the home team took command easing away to a 31-20 lead after three and outscoring Freeport 14-6 in the fourth to clinch the win.

It was a tough, physical game and neither team shot well throughout. “It was a good game,” said PDL Coach Tim Alford. “They got us all in a mess and we couldn’t shoot.”

Hillary Harper led PDL with 11 points, while Nikki Blalock scored 11 for Freeport and Dannica Mosher scored 10.

The finals between PDL and Jay are at 7 p.m.
