Prep roundup (March 27): Arnold lifters win county title

LYNN HAVEN - Arnold lifters won six weight classes on the way to a first-place finish in the county weightlifting championships on Thursday.

Mosley, which won three weight classes, finished second, following by Rutherford, Bozeman and Bay.

Wewa 3, Port St. Joe 2

PORT ST. JOE
Chelsey Pettis hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning and Samantha Rich tossed a no-hitter as Class 2A No. 1 Wewahitchka topped No. 2 Port St. Joe.

Rich gave up two runs in the fourth inning on a walk and throwing error that enabled both Tigers Sharks' (16-4) runs to score.

That tied it 2-2, and the Lady Gators got the gamewinner in the fifth when Hillary Chapman doubled and scored on Summer Grice's single.

Rich struck out 13 and walked two for Wewa (15-2). The Gators had nine hits off Kayla Minger, who struck out nine. Chapman was 3 for 4 with a single, double and triple for the Lady Gators. Pettis' homer was her fifth of the year.

Wewa plays at Wakulla today.

Blountstown 10, Sneads 0
BLOUNTSTOWN
Caitlin Peacock tossed a one-hitter and struck out two in a game shortened to five innings because of the run rule. She also had two hits and scored two runs.

Allison Jones led Blountstown's offense with three hits and three RBIs. Molly Fagen had three hits and scored three runs. Cherie Hires and Ashley Whitfield each had two hits; Whitfield had a triple and two RBIs.

Blountstown (14-6, 5-1 District 2-2A) plays at Cottondale on Tuesday in a battle of the top two teams in the district.

Holmes County 14, Marianna 0
BONIFAY
Mary Elizabeth Pippin tossed a two-hit shutout, striking out six, in a game shortened to five innings because of the run rule. Pippin also had two hits and one RBI.
Jenna Belser added two doubles and four RBIs for Holmes County. Jenna Steverson had a two-run home run, and Crystal Thompson and Rachael Gavin each had two hits.

Holmes County (15-3, 4-0 District 2-3A) hosts Mosley on Tuesday.

Rutherford 11, Arnold 3
SPRINGFIELD
Christina Williams picked up her second win of the week to improve to 5-1 backed by 13 hits. Alyssa Williams had three hits, Jennifer Couch, Mary Kitts and Christina Williams had two apiece for the Lady Rams, 10-8. Brittany Burkett added a double.

For Arnold, Lauren Butherus had two hits.

Rutherford plays at Arnold Tuesday.

Baseball
Bay 9, Pope John Paul 8
PANAMA CITY
Corey Newsome led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a triple and scored the winning run when Reid Wynn singled with one out against Pope John Paul of Hendersonville, Tenn.

It was a fitting ending for Newsome, who had quite a game. He was the winning pitcher, allowing three hits and striking out four, in two innings of relief. He also had three hits and scored three runs.

Jordan Mitchell had two hits, including a solo home run, and three RBIs for Bay. James Wynn had two hits and four RBIs.

Bay (10-4) plays at Arnold at 6 p.m. today.

Track and Field
Chiles meet

TALLAHASSEE
Gabe Holguin placed first in the 800 meters and 1600 meters to lead Bay results in the Chiles freshmen-sophomore meet. Holguin produced a meet record of 2 minutes, 1 second in the 800 and won the 1600 in 4:37.

Also placing first was Ashley Mosley in the girls long jump with 15 feet, 8 inches, Terrance Lowder, first in the boys 400 with a meet record 51.3 seconds and Lawrence Williams, first in the 110 hurdles in 16.2.

Other Bay placers:
Girls - Girls 4x100, third in 54.39 (Alisia Austin, Shannon Healey, Sierra Jones, Ashley Mosley); Mosley second high jump 5-0, Caprice Lee fifth high jump, Austin fifth long jump 14-11.

SAND HILLS
Bozeman dropped to 5-10 despite Jordan Hobbs going 4 for 4 with one RBI, Mike Campo getting a double and solo home run, and Blake Locher knocking in two runs. Louie Roberson was the losing pitcher. He pitched five innings and gave up four hits.

Mosley took a 6-1 win in the boys match, while Bay's girls triumphed 4-2.
