Wildlife management workshop coming to Marianna

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and several partners are sponsoring a wildlife management workshop March 11 in Marianna at the Jackson County Agriculture Office Complex.

            The workshop will run from 8:30 a.m. – 3:45 p.m. The Agriculture Office Complex is on Highway 276 in the Marinna city limits.  

            There’ll be presentations on such topics as managing small parcels of land for wildlife; common birds and their habitats in the Panhandle; learning the various species of snakes, frogs and spiders in Northwest Florida; using bat houses and bats; the value of oaks and acorns to wildlife; endangered plants in the Panhandle; longleaf pine forests and their history in the Southeast, and more.

            One session will deal with how landowners can tap into grants and cost-share programs to help manage their lands better for wildlife.

            In addition to the FWC, other sponsors of the day-long workshop are the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Science Extension Service, Florida Division of Forestry and the National Wild Turkey Federation. Lunch will be provided free of charge, but advance registration is required. Call the IFAS Extension Office in Marianna at 850-482-9620 by March 8 to register.
