16 Big Bend wrestlers capture district titles

It was a successful weekend for Big Bend area wrestlers.

In all, 16 individuals captured district tiitles, Lincoln High captured a district team title and 54 grapplers qualified for regional meets.

At the District 2-1A meet in Suwannee on Friday night, six Big Bend wrestlers captured titles, including Wakulla's Jeremy Hall (103), Scott Varner (140), Luke Taylor (160), Matt Fields (171) and Rickards' Jamarcus Crum (130) and Ron Brown (189).

"... Ron's unique style, quickness, dedication and wrestling smarts paid off as he won his matches to become district champion," Rickards coach Donald Horton said.

"Jamarcus Crump is a second-year wrestler with a lot of natural talent and is picking up the sport quickly." added Horton. "After some early season basketball desires, Jamarcus has dedicated himself to wrestling and captured his district title with an exciting match that came down to the very last second. With Jamarcus down by three points he got a reversal and pinned his opponent with one second left on the clock."

Wakulla, Rickards and Godby will wrestle in the Region 1-1A meet at Clay High School on Friday and Saturday.

At the District 2-2A meet in Lake City Columbia on Saturday night, 10 Big Bend wrestlers earned titles, including: Chiles' Jonathan Danforth (112), Jordan Ross (119), and Andrew Svendsen; Lincoln's Tyler Nerland (125), Jon Bush (130), Jake Burch (152), Josh Coleman (171), and Danny Rozofsky (189); and Leon's Devin Todman (140) and Trey Braun (285).

Leon, Lincoln and Chiles will compete in the Region 1-2A meet on Friday and Saturday at Chiles High.
