Chipola Indians Win Conference Title

MARIANNA— The Chipola Indians captured the Panhandle Conference title and will play St. Petersburg in the first round of the State JUCO Tournament, Thursday, March 3, at 6 p.m., in the Milton H. Johnson Health Center.

Chipola finished the regular season with a 64-56 loss to Tallahassee on Feb. 19.  Keith Dewitt led Chipola in the loss with 21 points and 8 rebounds.  Geron Johnson had 11 points.  Elijah Pittman had 11 points and 4 rebounds.

The Indians clinched the Conference Championship with a 69-62 win over Pensacola on Feb. 14. Marcos Knight led Chipola with 28 points and 12 rebounds. Shamarr Bowden had 11 points.

Chipola’s men (23-5, 9-3) are first in the FCCAA State Poll.  Tallahassee (28-8, 8-4) is fifth in the poll and will face Polk in the first round of the state tournament, Thursday, March 3, at 3 p.m. Palm Beach (25-5) is second in the poll.  Central Florida is (24-6) third. Northwest Florida (22-6, 7-5) is fourth.

The Lady Indians finished the 2011 season with a 76-45 win over Tallahassee on Feb. 19.  Cayla Walker led Chipola with 18 points and 3 rebounds. Jasmine Shaw had 17 points and 3 rebounds.

Pensacola (29-0, 12-0) is the Panhandle Conference champion and ranked first in the FCCAA State Women’s Poll. Pensacola and Northwest (22-6, 7-5) will represent the Panhandle in the Women’s State Tournament. Chipola (19-11, 5-7) finished third in the state poll with Gulf Coast is (15-11, 4-8) at sixth. TCC is (13-12, 2-10) is tenth.
