Chipola freshman All-American
Chipola College freshman Latoya Williams has been named to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) State Farm 2008 Junior College/Community College (JC/CC) All-America Basketball Team.
Selection committees in each of the nine WBCA geographical regions select 10 of the top women's basketball players in the nation to be honored.
According to Chipola coach David Lane, Williams is the first freshman from Chipola to win an All-American Award. Lane says the award is even more significant because it includes hundreds of players from all three divisions of community college basketball.
Williams led the Lady Indians and the Panhandle Conference in scoring this season with 18 points per game. She also averaged 9.5 rebounds per game.
Williams was named First Team All-Conference, First Team All-State, and has been nominated for NJCAA All-American team.
Coach Lane, said, “Latoya is a dynamic player who can do a lot of different things on the court. This award is important because the recognition comes from other coaches. To have two players from the same conference—(Williams from Chipola and Liles from Gulf Coast)—says a lot about the quality of basketball in the Panhandle."
The Lady Indians finished the season 21-9 record.
Members of the 2008 JC/CC State Farm Coaches' All-America Basketball Team are: Latoya Williams, Chipola College, Demauria (Dee) Liles, Gulf Coast CC; Danielle Adams, Jefferson College; Brittany Blackmon, South Plains College; Tegan Cunningham, Seward CC; Jazlyn Davis, Mt. San Antonio College; Darika Hill, Trinity Valley CC; Candace Rucker, Southwest Tennessee CC; Denise Scott, CC of Rhode Island; and Lauren Thomas-Johnson, Kirkwood CC.
Mark Gibson, assistant vice president of advertising for State Farm, said, “The State Farm Coaches All-America Team represents true excellence in the sport of women’s basketball and we are extremely proud to be associated with these remarkable student-athletes.”
The WBCA was founded in 1981 to promote women's basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game as a sport for women and girls. For information about the WBCA, visit wbca.org.
