Classic Media Day postponed
PANAMA CITY - Severe weather in parts of the region and the threat of
more rain on Friday led to the postponement of the Freedom All-Star
Classic Media Day.
The event was rescheduled for April 8 at 6 p.m., three days before the
high school basketball showcase takes place. Media Day will be held at
the Billy Harrison Field House on the campus of Gulf Coast Community
College. The boys and girls teams from the East and West will be fitted
into game jerseys, conduct interviews with local media and practice for
about 50 minutes each.
The decision to postpone the Freedom Classic Media Day was made early
Friday. The biggest concern was traveling for athletes, many who live
more than 45 minutes away from Panama City. The severe threat appeared
to have passed at 1 p.m., but periods of heavy rain and wind were
forecast throughout the night.
The rescheduled gathering will give each team a final chance to
prepare. The West teams have yet to have a practice, while the East
teams have gathered a few times. The East boys and girls worked out this
week, with the majority of players from both squads appearing.
The fifth annual Freedom All-Star Classic will be held April 11. The
girls game is scheduled for 11 a.m. The boys will play at 1 p.m.
The series is tied 2-2 on the boys side. The West girls have won three
of the four previous games, with the East's lone win coming in 2006.
The East teams are chosen from senior players residing in The News
Herald's coverage area, which includes Bay, Franklin, Holmes,
Washington, Calhoun, Gulf and Jackson counties. The West teams are
chosen from the Northwest Florida Daily News' area of Walton, Santa
Rosa and Okaloosa counties.
