Baylor lures Rams' Watson

SPRINGFIELD — When the dust settled on Sean Watson’s recruitment Wednesday morning, Baylor was the one school left standing.

The Bears came on strong in the last week-and-a-half, Rutherford coach Greg Rivers said, promising Watson playing time as a freshman, and keeping him at his natural and favorite position, defensive tackle.

On Wednesday, Watson (6-foot-3, 280 pounds) signed a scholarship tender from Baylor during a ceremony in the new Rutherford Gym alongside family, coaches and teammates.

“I feel like I can do big things at Baylor and in the Big 12,” Watson said. “They want me to come in this summer and do my summer sessions and come in and be a part of the team. They don’t want me to redshirt. They want me to play right away.”

His signature ended months of speculation on where he would play college football. Watson had his eyes set on Arkansas, hoping to join his cousin, Port St. Joe’s Darrell Smith who signed with the Razorbacks Wednesday morning. Arkansas reportedly told Watson it would sign him if another defensive tackle commitment fell through.

When that didn’t happen, Watson was left with FAU, FIU and Baylor. Watson verbally committed to FAU two weeks ago as a safety net, he said, but wanted to keep his options open. As for FIU, he felt the two South Florida schools were too similar to choose from.

“I didn’t want to make that choice at that moment, but I didn’t want to lose any more scholarships so I verballed,” Watson said.

Watson is the only defensive tackle the Bears signed on Wednesday and is part of a plan by Baylor coach Art Briles to rebuild a sluggish defense. Fourteen of Baylor’s 22 signees were on defense.

The Bears were ranked No. 94 in overall defense, allowing 405.58 yards per game; 75th in pass defense, allowing 226.83 yards and 98th in rush defense, allowing 178.75.

Watson was the only Florida recruit Baylor signed Wednesday and was just one of five who weren’t from Texas. He was ranked as the 38th-best defensive lineman by Rivals.com and 105th by Scout.com, and was the 82nd-ranked player in the state of Florida.

Last season, Watson had 65 tackles and was second in the area with eight sacks.

“I think the coach will love him,” Rivers said. “I think he’s going to make it well if he prepares himself.”

I think that someone else should have been chosen. There we plenty who has more to give than him. opinions are free!

Chris Wells is amazing! Maybe he will do as good as Dennis Lee did! But oviously people don't know how good they have it. And don't appreciate good things. Maybe things will go better for Chris. Congats Chris.

If we change the charter, like we did before, then the city council will have no choice but to have an elected chief. Buy Napa.

It shouldn't matter where he resides but, the city shouldn't have to pay for gas for him to drive to work and back home either.

I think that Chris will do a wonderful job for the City of Bonifay and also better the Police dept. I have already been hearing positive things about the Police dept. and hope to continue doing so. Good luck to Chris and his crew!

I imagine the charter reads that you have to live in the city limits to vote, no matter where you buy your automotive parts. Anyways, the council isn't going to give up their authority to appoint the Chief. By the way, how is the HUD business?

I think the charter says he has to move to Bonifay. No matter though, the charter will soon be changed to require the chief position to be an elected position and we can then vote on who we want. Buy Napa.

It may be a good thing for him not to reside inside Bonifay. He isn't impacted from inside influences, he can remain neutral and this will permit him to do a better job as Chief of police.

he should have to move to bonifay. I heard that the city fixed it so that he will not have to move. city council members have to live in the city so why not the chief. Makes you wander if the mayor knew something going in to the interviews.

The only thing that bothers me is his lack of experience. Did you notice who quickly he advanced in the SO. Went from a road deputy in Inv in 1 yr then to chief inv in 4 more years. One thing I will give him is he is definitely a fine man. Will he have to move to Bonifay?

I feel very confident that Chris will do a fine job for the citizens of Bonifay. Of the applicants he was definitely the best choice. Chris has always had strong aspirations and should fit into this role like a glove! I, along with many others will be happy to lend any kind of support to Chris to better this struggling department.
