BOAZ — Christian Collins rushed for 191 yards and scored both touchdowns as Boaz beat Alexandria 14-7 in a key Class 5A, Region 6 contest.

The win was the first ever for the Pirates over the Valley Cubs after eight losses.

The game was scoreless for almost three quarters before Boaz put together a 17 play, 89-yard after Alexandria drove to the Boaz 11 before turning the ball over on downs.

On the scoring drive, Collins carried the ball 14 times and caught a pass. He scored the touchdown on a 15-yard run.

Gerardo Baeza added the point after for a 7-0 lead with 31 seconds left in the third quarter.

Alexandria answered on the ensuing possession, driving 70 yards using 14 plays to knot the game at 7. Romeo Dye scored on a 2-yard run with 5:34 left in the game.

Taylor Smith gave Boaz excellent field condition to begin the game-winning drive, returning the kickoff 50 yards to the Valley Cub 34. The game winning drive was all Collins as he carried it all eight plays and scored on a 4-yard run with 1:39 left. Baeza kicked the point after.

Alexandria began the final possession from its 36 and drove to the Boaz 34 but on the game's final play, quarterback Jacob Wells' pass to the end zone was batted down.

Boaz improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in region play. The Pirates host Pisgah on Friday in a non-region game.

Alexandria fell to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the region. They host Crossville on Friday in region play.

In Etowah County play, Glencoe fell to 0-4 on the season with a 40-7 loss to B.B. Comer.

Ohatchee 45, Cleveland 6

OHATCHEE — Ohatchee rolled past Cleveland 45-6 Friday.

Andrew Green was 9-of-14 for 99 yards and Cleveland's lone touchdown, a 41-yard touchdown pass to Daquarrius Phillips. Parker Gilliland caught five passes for 51 yards for the Panthers, who finished with 101 total yards, including negative-4 yards on the ground.

 

Albertville 20, Buckhorn 8

Albertville held off a second-half rally by Buckhorn on Friday to post a 20-8 victory in Class 6A, Region 8 football.

It was Aggie coach Dale Pruitt’s 285th career victory. His record in 37 seasons as a coach, four at Albertville is 285-134.

Isaiah Pankey ran 18 yards for a touchdown midway through the first quarter to put Albertville on top 6-0. Near the end of the period, Jacob Dendy started a drive with a 33-yard run to Buckhorn’s 38. The Aggies put together another nine plays and Dendy scored from the 5. Ben Allen passed to Pankey for 2 points with 8:42 remaining in the half.

Dendy’s 1-yard touchdown run with 7:39 remaining in the third quarter was set up by a 38-yard option pass from Pankey to Andrew Tramell.

Buckhorn downed a punt at Albertville’s 1-yard line, and the Aggies ultimately gave the Bucks a safety with 11:18 left in the game.

Quarterback Jaylon Dixon ran 17 yards for Buckhorn’s only touchdown.

Albertville, 2-1 overall and 1-1 i the region, hosts non-league foe Cullman next week. Buckhorn fell to 1-3 and 0-2.

 

Geraldine 49, Brindlee Mountain 0

Geraldine overpowered Brindlee Mountain 49-0 on Friday in Class 3A, Region 7 football.

The Bulldogs improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the region. Brindlee Mountain is 0-4 and 0-2.

Geraldine scored touchdowns on its first four rushing plays. The Bulldogs didn’t attempt a pass in the game.

Geraldine led 36-0 in the opening quarter. It was 49-0 at intermission.

Austin King, Andrew Hall, Jamison Rowell, Chase Kermody, Sebastian Totherow and PJ Watts rushed for touchdowns and Kyle Thackerson returned a punt for another score. Totherow had nine tackles, Anthony Baldwin an interception and Brandon East a fumble recovery for Geraldine, which visits New Hope for a region game next week.

 

Crossville 31, Douglas 7

Crossville snapped a 10-game losing streak on Friday with a 31-7 homecoming victory over Class 5A, Region 6 rival Douglas.

The Lions moved to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the region. Douglas fell to 0-3 and 0-2.

Trent Bryant passed 26 yards to Cam Adkins for a touchdown as Crossville took a 7-0 lead just 1:44 into the game.

Bryant scored on a 6-yard run with 4:10 remaining in the half and a 3-yard run late in the period as the Lions led 20-0 at intermission.

Crossville forced two safeties, sandwiched around a 17-yard touchdown run by Jay Luther, to go up 31-0 after three periods. Kevin James ran 55 yards with 1:18 remaining in the game for Douglas’ lone touchdown.

Bryant passed for 136 yards and ran for 45 to lead Crossville’s offense.

The Lions visit Alexandria and Douglas travels to Sardis for region games next week.

 

JUNIOR VARSITY

Gadsden City 18, Albertville 6

Gadsden City defeated Albertville 18-6 in ninth grade football recently.

The Titans scored their touchdowns on a 55-yard D’javi Byers run, 18-yard pass from Kelsey Smith to Rodney Johnson and a 10-yard CJ Miller rush.

Byers finished with 155 yards rushing while Miller added 122 yards. Smith added 45 yards on the ground. Perry Byers and Beau Sigmon each added 10 yards rushing.

Johnson, Ricky Waldron and Khamari Smith all had receptions. Malachi Butler led the way on the offensive line for the Titans’ rushing attack.

Samuel Horton led the Gadsden City defense with 10 tackles and one sack. Jirrell McClure and Krystachian Moore each had one sack. Ben Bean, Christian Williams, Nehemiah Washington and Taihgee Harrell all had one pass breakup.

Smith and Moore each totaled one interception.
