ASHLAND — Thurston buttoned up its Midwestern League baseball title with a sweep of host Ashland on Saturday.
The No. 2-ranked Colts (21-5, 20-1 MWL) won the first game 15-7 before shutting out the Grizzlies (1-25, 1-20) in the second game 15-0 in five innings. It was the 13th straight victory for Thurston.
Preston Fisher and Decker Stedman each belted home runs in the first game. Jaren Sargeant was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs and Trevor Duran went 3-for-5 with a triple, a double and three RBIs for Thurston.
In the second game, Noah Francis went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, Sargeant was 4-for-4 with a double, and Fisher went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs Andrew Ward allowed one hit and had seven strikeouts on the mound for Thurston.
Marist 9, North Eugene 2; Marist 7, North Eugene 3: Dillon Parsons was 2-for-3 with a double and three runs for the Spartans (12-14, 11-10 MWL) in the first game, and Nate Duke was 2-for-3 with a run for the Highlanders (6-20, 5-16). In the second game, Sonny Hiday was 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs and two RBIs for Marist, and Cooper Greene was 2-for-3 with two runs.
Churchill 8, Springfield 1; Churchill 10, Springfield 0, 5 inns.: Cole Wilkenson was 2-for-2 and scored three runs and Kellar Edwards went 3-for-4 with a double for Churchill (19-7, 16-5) in the first game. In the second game, Bau Barnett gave up four hits and had five strikeouts, and Wilkenson, Lund and Hattan had two hits each. Churchill faces Silverton in a play-in game Friday.
Grants Pass 5, Sheldon 1; Grants Pass 4, Sheldon 0: The Cavemen (10-16, 7-11 SWC) swept the Irish to take fifth place in the league standings. The Irish 9-16, 6-12) finish in sixth. Patrick Herbert has a pair of hits for Sheldon in the first game and Prickel added a run-scoring single. The Irish could muster just three hits in the second game.
South Medford 7, Willamette 1; South Medford 13, Willamette 2: The No. 2-ranked Black Tornado swept the host Wolverines.
Sheldon 6, Grants Pass 2; Sheldon 3, Grants Pass 0: The Irish topped the Cavemen (19-5, 14-4 SWC) with Camille Leach pitching the shutout on five hits, no walks and eight strikeouts. Leach was 3-for 3-with two RBIs, Emma Neuman was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Kelsi Sorenson was 3-for-4 with an RBI for Sheldon (20-6, 12-6). In the second game, Sorenson was 2-for-3 and Leach was 1-for-3 with an RBI for Sheldon.
South Medford 4, Willamette 2; South Medford 11, Willamette 1: The Panthers (7-17, 5-13 SWC) swept the Wolverines (3-22, 0-18) in Medford.
Thurston 7, Churchill 3; Thurston 15, Churchill 1: The Colts downed the Lancers as Hope Burke was 2-for-3 with a double, and Olivia Jetgvig went 2-for-4 for Thurston (16-10,11-7). Sierra Loyd was 2-for-3.
Marist 16, North Eugene 0: The Spartans (21-3, 17-1 MWL) finish the regular season with just one league loss after the win against the Highlanders (4-18, 2-16), who forfeited Saturday's second game.
