Westbrook Christian and Hokes Bluff each moved up in this week’s ASWA high school baseball rankings released Wednesday night.
The Warriors (18-6) jumped three spots in this week’s Class 2A poll after going 3-1 over the past week, with their lone loss being to 4A, No. 8 Oneonta. They picked up a pair of victories over Sand Rock while also defeating Collinsville over the past week, all area wins. Westbrook has secured a playoff berth.
The Eagles (16-5) rose one spot, to No. 6, in 4A after going 2-1 since the last rankings. The one loss was to area foe Cherokee County, which jumped Hokes Bluff to No. 5 in the poll. The teams will take the field for at least one game Thursday to determine how the playoff situation in their area will play out.
Etowah (23-8) moved down one spot in 5A, to No. 6, coming off a 13-3 home area loss to Boaz. The Pirates leapfrogged the Blue Devils to No. 5 after being unranked last week. The teams play again Thursday to determine the area champion, though both are guaranteed to make the postseason; Etowah must beat Boaz twice to claim the area crown.
Coosa Christian fell out of the top 10 in 1A. The Conquerors (17-8) went 2-3 over the past week. However, they only need one win over Appalachian on Thursday (in two chances) to land a playoff spot.
There again were no Etowah County teams in the rankings, but Etowah (15-10) landed in the others nominated category in 5A.
Other area baseball teams ranked included Piedmont (No. 6 in 3A) and Fyffe (No. 7 in 2A).
Area softball teams ranked included Cherokee County (No. 6 in 4A), Plainview (No. 2 in 3A), Collinsville (No. 7 in 2A) and Sand Rock (No. 9 in 2A).
