South Walton takes sting out of Hornets
SANTA ROSA BEACH - Junior running back Bryant Adams rushed for 119 yards, two touchdowns and recovered a fumble to set the tone for the South Walton Seahawks' 38-6 Homecoming victory over the Cottondale Hornets Friday night.
"It feels good to bounce back after losing to Baker last week," Adams said.
As Seahawk receiver Hunter Infinger put it, "We can scratch another one off the list."
The Seahawks upped their record to 4-1.
"They put on a good show for a good crowd tonight," South Walton Coach David Barron said, noting he hasn't lost a Homecoming game since coming to South Walton five years ago.
The Seahawk defense gave up a lot of yardage, but few points to the Hornets. Cottondale had 230 yards total offense with 200 of them rushing.
"Our defense came around and shut them down," Barron said.
Quinston Morris had two quarterback sacks for the Seahawks, while Mason Gonzales and Spencer Martin each had one.
As for the offense, Barron said, "I challenged them earlier this week to score in every quarter."
The Seahawks met the challenge with 263 yards of offense, and it all started just seconds after the opening kickoff. South Walton kicked off to Cottondale and forced the ball lose on the first play from scrimmage. Adams came up with the ball on the Hornets' 23.
Two plays later, David Bazylak scrambled into the end zone on an 18-yard run. The Seahawks struck again on a 17-yard run by Adams late in the first quarter for a 13-0 lead.
Cottondale scored its only TD of the game midway through the second quarter on a 12-yard run by Jacob Herring.
South Walton answered before halftime on a 6-yard run by Cody Adams. Bazylak ran the ball up the middle for the conversion and the Seahawks led 21-6.
In the third quarter, Cody Adams broke loose for a 13-yard touchdown run and Bryant Adams barreled through on a 2-yard score.
The final Seahawk points were on a 36-yard field goal by Bazylak.
