Local Couple Arrested on Narcotics and Weapon Charges

Washington County Sheriff's Office

The Washington County Drug Task Force, consisting of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the Chipley Police Department reports the arrest of a couple on narcotics and weapon charges, on Tuesday, Jan. 24.

Deputies stopped a vehicle on Millers Ferry Road near Shell Landing Road.  While attempting to stop the vehicle, deputies observed the passenger throw a black garbage bag out the window.  When the vehicle finally came to a stop, officers placed both the driver and the passenger in custody.  During a search of the vehicle, officers found several items used to make methamphetamines including digital scales, ph tester, and multiple chemicals.  Officers also discovered a rifle and marijuana in the vehicle.

Arrested and charged was:

Sabrina Christine Hughes, 39, of Wausau, with Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony; Possession of Marijuana; Destruction/Tampering with Evidence; Possession of Drug Paraphernalia; and Possession of Listed Chemicals with Intent to Manufacture

Jason Paul Johnston, 33, of Ponce De Leon, with Fleeing and Eluding; Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony; Possession of Marijuana; Destruction/Tampering with Evidence; Possession of Drug Paraphernalia; Possession of Listed Chemicals with Intent to Manufacture

Both Hughes and Johnston have prior arrests on theft, drug and resisting charges.  Hughes is currently being held on a $30,000 bond and Johnston on a $40,000 bond at the Washington County Jail.

“There is a tremendous amount of relief when we locate and are able to remove those who put themselves and the community at risk by willingly using their vehicles to transport highly volatile chemicals, and in this case, a firearm as well,” said Sheriff Bobby Haddock.  “This is a perfect cocktail of factors that can so often end in tragedy.  Our officers are trained to identify key indicators and neutralize that risk.  It was a job well done.”

Sheriff Haddock asks that anyone with information on illegal drug activity contact the sheriff’s office at 638-TIPS (8477) or by email at tips@wcso.us.
