Graceville beats Vernon 28-16, Holmes County falls

VERNON – The victory wasn’t a thing of beauty, but the Graceville Tigers (4-1) were happy to get it as they defeated homestanding Vernon (2-2) 28-16 Friday night.

Both teams had fumbles and interceptions stop drives, but the Tigers’ strong ground game allowed them to control the ball for most of the game and wear down the smaller Yellow Jackets.

Graceville struck first when Justin Miles hit Darrell Olds with a 27-yard touchdown pass, with the successful two-pointer making it 8-0 with 4:17 left in the first quarter. Belton Snider matched that for Vernon with a 1-yard run with 13 seconds left in the first quarter, and the extra point kick making it 8-7.

Miles closed out first-half scoring with a 3-yard run with 3:32 left, and the two-pointer making it 16-7 at the half.

Graceville’s Leron Hoover scored from 14 yards out with 9:36 left in the third quarter to make it 22-7 Tigers, and Antrell Wright broke four tackles to score for the Tigers with 8:034 left in the game. A muffed punt gave Vernon a safety, and John Johnson hit Ashonvi Davis with a 33-yard touchdown pass with 1:57 left, and Cody Small’s kick ending scoring at 28-16.

Vernon opens district play against South Walton next week at homecoming, and Graceville plays Rocky Bayou Christian on the road.

Thank God we live in the United States where everyone has freedom of speech and freedom of opinion. Just think, here in the good ole US, you are ALL right.

Hey afan, since when is hiring a coach a game. No one is calling foul buddy. The only thing foul is comments like yours. Leave politics off the football field and encourage the players

Hey Guys, It's not nice to kick a coach and his team while they're down. A little encouragement is what coach and the Devils need right now. I have confidence that the Devils will be playing good ball soon.

Hey Magnoleya What do you know? Not high school football. Did Howell have any talent the last two years? No! He won more district titles than chipley did. With alot less talent. I promise if he would have had this team he would not be o and what ever.

We always gave it our all and won. I hear this idiot coach is facing complaints/investigation with educational practices commission for cursing the kids. Wait until the next lawsuit hits. Won't that be expensive?

Coach Martin is getting his chance right now. He new that coming in to it. I hear he has had the same problems at every school he has been at. Marianna, Crestview, and Paxton. get out and talk to the people in the community, not the administrators he worked for. They all stick together.

Since when has bonifay ever had talent? It has always been the work ethic of the players. I say, let the boys that can play for him stay and play, for those who cant, go to another school and play. Maybe when they are all gone someone will take notice. as far as turning a program around in 1 year- That was the 1 year contract the coach signed for 65,000. For less money he could have asked for more time. I remember Marianna being down and in 1 year it was turned around, the next they were headed to state. Johnson should have had the opportunity to coach his boys.

Any football fan or enthusiast knows that a program in not built in a single season. As a former HCHS player during the Lou Eitson era and former team mate of Carlan, I can vouch for his integrity and ability. This is not a professional sports program that is built with recruiting and lots of salary. I can't think of any High School program that was turned around in a single year. Support our team with encouragment instead of so much negativity. Give Coach Martin a chance. I can assure you, no one is more dissapointed in his program than he is, and no one is working harder to fix it.

Hey Coach, Andy Howell did not do any better. Now that was pathetic. His laxidasical attitude toward winning or losing. Where were you then, COACH? Or did YOU give it a shot with almost zero talent and bomb as well?

Magnoleya - Oct 07, 2008 02:17:41 PM Remove Comment

You can have the best coach in the country but he can't win a game if he doesn't have TALENT. Take a look at the sidelines. You have a small team. Now look in the stands. BIG BOYS, with obvious athletic ability who won't play because they would rather sit in the stands. There is little school spirit and much apathy. Coach Martin can't work miracles with little to nothing.

Magnoleya - Oct 07, 2008 02:00:45 PM Remove Comment

hey reality, the political game got started when your superintendent hired your coach. dont call foul now when we're in the middle of the game. they made the rules, others are just playin by them.

I heard Al Simmons was wanting to comeback when Martin was hired. Can anyone explain why he wasnt hired? Someone said he just wanted to coach-at a reduced rate. Duh, sounds like a nobrainer to me.
