Three new Council members in Vernon

VERNON — Three new council members were elected Tuesday night in Vernon. New members Joey Brock and Trey Hawkins garnered 70 votes, incumbent Gwen Marsh had 68 votes and newcomer Tina Armstrong Sloan tallied 63 to fill the four open seats. Sloan will fill the remainder of the term for the seat John Hawkins recently resigned from, and the others will fill two-year terms. Incumbent Mayor Al Mani was unopposed.

Sloan is the daughter of retiring Councilwoman Narvel Armstrong, who did not seek reelection and retired after 32 years on city council. Hawkins is the son of former Councilman and School Board Member John Hawkins.

Other city council candidates and their votes were incumbent Peggy Dobbins with 55, Jimmy Boyette with 50, former Mayor Oscar Ward with 39, Perry Holley with 32 and Norma Cochran with 29. Candidates will be certified and sworn in on Tuesday, March 23 at 7 p.m.
