Election dates set for Vernon Council

VERNON – Election dates were set during the regularly scheduled meeting of Vernon City Council Tuesday evening for the positions now occupied by Narvel Armstrong, Peggy Dobbins, Gwen March and now with the recent letter of resignation, John Hawkins.

“I am resigning from my position because my wife is applying for the Vernon Deputy Clerk position,” Hawkins wrote in his letter of resignation. “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the citizens of Vernon and I hope to serve them again in the future.”

Hawkins’ position will be filled in the election and the winner will serve a one-year term before running for re-election. Qualifying dates are set for Feb. 16 – 19 and the election date was set for March 9 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at City Hall.

The Council approved of Dawn Hawkins as the new Vernon City Deputy Clerk.

Bob Wells with the Historical Society was granted permission to put a portion of a log cabin in the third building of the Historical Society’s Museum as long as it was treated for termites first.

The Council approved Resolution 10-87, which is approval of submitting a revolving grant application for the wastewater facilities.

In the mayor’s report, Mayor Al Mani reported that Jackson Street had to be shut down due to washout and the cost of repairs would be around $2,500; he said this would be a savings of around $8,000 if the City did the work.

The Council approved of an assessment of the city’s electrical for a possible energy-conserving grant.

The Council reviewed the contract for the recreation director to see when the contract runs out, which is July 12. There was no action to terminate the contract.

The gym in the Community Center will be open for basketball Monday through Thursday, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The Council also approved of the consent agenda, which included the minutes of Jan. 25; payment of bills; adjustments to customer accounts as per attached list; changes to fire department checking account to remove Shawn Sanders as fire chief and add Brent Gibson; and to accept the resignation of John Hawkins.
