Vernon Florida Historical Society Prepares for ‘Vernon Bridge Festival' Commemoration
VERNON - Angia Morris, President of the Vernon, Florida Historical Society stated today that Vernon was well on the way to being prepared for the ‘Vernon Bridge Festival’, slated for Saturday, May 30.
This free festival, adopting the slogan of ‘Bridging the Past with Our Future’, is a celebration of the 70-year anniversary of the Vernon Bridge. The event is especially compelling because the bridge will soon be demolished to make room for the new, wider bridge necessary to accommodate the 4-laning of Highway 79 through Washington County, Florida.
Event organizers expect in excess of one thousand attendees to enjoy the free fish fry, children’s activities, arts and craft vendors, multiple car shows and many other attractions. The commemoration event starts at 10AM, with the fish fry starting at 11AM and the entertainment starting at Noon.
Morris points out that many of the residents and dignitaries attending this event were present for the original opening of the bridge in 1939. ‘This is a bittersweet event’, Morris states, ‘We are thankful for the progress and growth in this part of Northwest Florida but we want to be sure to embrace and preserve our heritage.’
