Galloway, Scott, Register sworn in; Schools expect to lose $438,000 in December

BONIFAY – Gary Galloway was sworn in as new Holmes County School Superintendent Tuesday morning at the District office. Family members joined Galloway as County Judge Owen Powell swore him in.

District 2 School Board Member Gary Scott and District 4 Member Anthony Register were also sworn in. Scott won reelection over Debbie Kolmetz and Register was unopposed.

Scott noted that the schools are expected to be docked about $438,000 by the state in early December due to lack of revenue. He said that based on conversation with Galloway that the new superintendent understands the situation the schools are in, “and desires to make the changes we need,” Scott said.

“This is a huge blow,” Scott said of the state cuts.

School Board Attorney Brandon Young also announced that the new president of the University of West Florida, Judy Bense, will be the guest at a reception at Holmes County High School Thursday night at 4 p.m. Bense, the sister of Republican State Rep. and former Speaker of the State House Allan Bense, is coming to promote UWF to local high school students.

One program Bense will talk about is the Pace Scholarship that has been awarded to four Holmes County students. HCHS graduate Caleb Johnson is attending UWF on that scholarship.

The Board also approved hiring former Superintendent Steve Griffin as a teacher of special purpose. Galloway said Griffin would tentatively work at Bonifay Elementary School at the discretion of the Principal.

Ricky Callahan was chosen chairman and Vernon Lewis vice-chairman.

Steve sold our school out to the ACLU and he paid for it. It's as simple as that. What goes around always comes around in due time.

This is in response to the comment persecuting Gary Galloway for hiring Mr. Griffin as a "teacher of special purposes" instead of finding him a job as a principal. What did you expect Mr. Galloway to do, fire one of the principals we already have and give his job to Mr. Griffin. I think both gentlemen have done an excellent job during the transition and I commend both of them for the way they have handled the situation. Good Job, guys! Way to set a good example for all Holmes County citizens.

I read the Holmes County Times the other day to find this rage of a newspaper printing anonymous communications. In one case the items in question were about the recreation center and the others were about Sheriff Tim Brown. The communications were taken from the newspaper's website and published on the opinion page anonymously. That is a crime. Shame on you Jay Liesberg. Below is what the law says and I suspect when the new state attorney takes office, Mr. Liesberg can expect a criminal complaint to be filed. Owner or editor of the paper also guilty. Any owner, manager, publisher or editor of any newspaper or other publication who permits any anonymous communication or communications such as is signed otherwise than with the true name of the writer, and such name published therewith to appear in the columns of the publication in which said communication any person is attacked in his or her good name, or it is attempted to bring disgrace or ridicule upon any person, such owner, manager, publisher or editor shall be guilty of a misdemeanor of the first degree.

Come on Holmes County. Work together. The jealousy and backbiting have never served you well in the past. Why not give Mr. Galloway your support so he can get your children's school system through the very tough times you are facing? It will be be difficult enough to weather the financial crisis looming in any case, but dooming the administration with negativity will only hurt all of you in the long run. Show your children that mature adults can work together for the common good. They ARE watching you know!

A school,ha. only the district is, but not in the average of all the county schools. As usual the Department of Education dumbed down the classification for our district but kept the qualifications for individual schools. I am proud of our children and teachers, but the whole is greater than the average of the parts. Good luck Gary, I am sure George Washington knew how you felt. He had never led a country, but went down as one of our greatest Presidents in history. Many may say that you lack experience in administration, good. Look know farther than wall street or the auto industry to see what happens when you loose common sense and promote only those that know how the system works. Glad to see a common man doing the peoples work. The true American dream comes true. Rather be known as a yard dog that fights than a pedigree on the porch.

Huh?, Maybe you should be the one to pay more attention to your grammatical skills, because in your first sentence you didn't capitalize my name, a proper noun. Also, "neighbors" should be possessive in your context and there should be a comma after little. If you would use these skills your text would have prosody. If you’re wandering what prosody means, look it up.

How many of you are at board meetings to express your concerns? How many of you are at any public meetings held at the schools for parents to express your concerns? How many are you parents of kids that go to Holmes Schools? If you have answered no to any of the above questions, then shut up the gossip because if you were really concerned you would have been at those places expressing them when something could have been done. Steve Griffin is a great man and continues to be through all of the trials. Give it a break. And yea, some of you are correct Gary Galloway has never held an office of this magnitude, but he will have to learn quick or the good ol boys will run him out.

grim reaper needs to learn a few grammatical skills. Oops, I am sorry some punctuation and writing skills. Sorry for the big words. As I can see you were not part of achieving the A grade for Holmes County Schools. Grab a dictionary or your neighbors childrens language book and try reading a little then get back to us. As for Steve and Gary, you have our blessings and trust that you will do what is right for the children.

Politicians are the same all over. They promise to build a bridge even where there is no river and standing behind them are blind supporters that hear running water. Promises were made someone made more now they are in office. What is that saying promise are made to be broken. The future changes in our school system are going to be those promises. It is sad that ability leadership and A schools cant keep someone elected. Reap what you sow.

It is not nor has it ever been all about Steve. Only the students should matter. Steve was just the icing on the cake. He represented the district at the state level with dignity and class. Something never seen at his level before. And that made the students receive the positive attention they deserve. For once the county was known for something good. Not something to embarrass like in years past. And he did it all legally. LOL

Mr. Griffin is a respectable man who has chosen to stay on for the betterment of the children and people of Holmes County. He could have walked away and not assisted in any way. He chose to stay and support Mr. Galloway and to keep the continued interest of the CHILDREN and EDUCATION at heart. God Bless both these men!
