BeachReach 2010 to provide more than 13,000 safe rides and pancakes to students in Panama City Beach

Nearly 7000 students volunteer for alternative spring break

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla.As hundreds of thousands of students converge upon Panama City Beach for the annual college ritual, one group is poised to offer students a safe alternative to spring break’s risky behaviors.

BeachReach, a program that has been offering rides and pancake meals to spring breakers for since 1998, is on-site and ready to provide more than 13,000 rides over a three-week period to students needing a safe ride to their destination.

In addition to getting drunk drivers off the roads, the goal of the nearly 700 BeachReach student volunteers is to work in partnership with local authorities and corporate partners, including Verizon, to help lower the startling high numbers of binge drinking and physical assaults that plague Panama City each March.

“Our goal is to develop relationships with students while providing needed services that will keep them out of harm’s way,” said Angel Ellis, event project coordinator for Threads, the program that sponsor’s BeachReach. “We’ve assisted several girls that needed help after being in uncomfortable situations and countless more students that planned to try to drive back to their hotel.”

In addition to safe rides, BeachReach will provide a free pancake breakfast and an opportunity for fellowship among students through March 26. Last year, BeachReach served more than 12,000 pancakes over 12 days. For more information, visit http://threadsmedia.com/beachreach/ or via phone 800.254.2022.
