CHIPLEY – Democrat Bobby Haddock was re-elected to his second term as Washington County sheriff with over 48 percent of the votes. Haddock won a three-way contest with NPA candidate Rock Warden, a state trooper, and former deputy Greg Hutching, currently an instructor at Washington-Holmes Technical Center.

“I am humbled by the support everyone has given me,” said Haddock. “As we went from door to door we’ve heard the needs of the people and intend to provide those needs to the best of our abilities.”

Republican Sandra Cook won the vacant superintendent of schools position with over 54 percent of the votes. She had 5,936 votes and Democrat Mike Park had 4,960. Cook succeeds Calvin Stevenson, who chose not to run for re-election after one term in office.

Cook is the first Republican superintendent and the first woman to hold the office.

“I want to tell everyone thank-you for your support, everyone has been fabulous and I appreciate everything they’ve done,” said Cook. “Our efforts are towards what’s best for the children and that’s exactly what we’ll do.”

Democrat Charles Brock took back the seat he lost four years ago for County Commissioner District 3 with over 58 percent of the votes over incumbent Republican Jerry W. Sapp.

Democrat Donnie Strickland won re-election as County Commissioner for District 1 with over 41 percent of the votes. Strickland defeated Republican Hilton Kelly, NPA Randy Wilson and NPA Oscar Ward.

Republican Bill Howell, a former Chipley city councilman, won County Commissioner District 5 with over 59 percent of the votes over Democrat John Harmon. Harmon defeated incumbent Ronnie Finch in the party primary.

It was good turnout for Washington County. “We have close to 16,000 registered voters in Washington County,” said Supervisor of Elections Carol Griffin after the final election results came in for Washington County. “Over 11,000 of those voted, which I can say is a pretty good turn out.”

Griffin was re-elected for supervisor of elections with over 72 percent of the votes over Republican and E-911 Director Jerry Brock.

Democrat Linda Hayes Cook was re-elected as clerk of circuit court with over 74 percent of the votes over Republican Malcolm Gainey.

Pam Cates won the non-partisan runoff for School Board Member District 3 with over 57 percent of the votes over incumbent John W. Hawkins.

Amendment 2 got 9,143 yes votes and 1,547 no votes. Republican John McCain tallied 8,165 votes and Democrat Barack Obama got 2,858.

Dr Cook, Please don't follow the example of past adminstrations by hiring Holmes County rejects.

Maybe, Mrs. Cook will do something about the ridiculous schedule we are on at Chipley High School. I've been involved with 3 high schools in other states with my sons older siblings and we have never seen a class schedule as stupid as his. I'm not really concerned about our school grade. But this schedule surely doesn't help.

I'm trying so hard to be a gracious winner but ha, ha, ha we won.

To the folks complaining about our "historic" election--Guess what, each and every election is historic. Just because a bi-racial person was elected doesn't make it any more important. Think about those first few presidents when we were a new country, don't you think they weren't pretty instrumental in setting us on a path to being the greatest country in the world?

I guess the history you are referring to is the election of the 44th president.

I stand corrected, Nancy Pelosi should share no blame, she has done an outstanding job.

Afraid, you don't think Barney Frank and Chris Dodd had anything to do with the collapse of our economy? Check out Fannie Mae and Freddie Mack and their involvement there. You are also drinking cool ade.

Afraid, keep your head buried in the sand. Not all Democrats are liberals however most Republicans are thieves. You don't think the collapse of our economy is bad times? You don’t think the mortgage crisis and the war over oil is bad for our beloved Country? I have worked hard my entire life, started 3 successful businesses and have sent not only my children to college but have everything set for my grandchildren to go. My family has spilled more than its share of blood for this Country and I, like the rest of the nation, am tired of giving our tax dollars to wealthy elite, the REAL welfare recipients. Washington County is a classic case in point of people not wanting to pay taxes but are the first in line for grants, subsidies and every freebie the government has to hand out. They take from the system but dont contribute to it because they feel its better if someone else does the contributing. So, Afraid, go back to chewing on your propaganda pie sprinkled with hate. Its still sad that this newspaper chooses to ignore history.

Tally seems to be a bleeding hear Liberal, nothing makes them happy. Its to bad your new Pres is not a native. The comment about the Vernon Schools you are right now we will suffer no more. No more unqualified teachers in the class room because they are great at cutting grass for a Sports First atmosphere that we have always had. Go Cook we deserve better quality teaching in all our schools.

Move? They won't move. Our county has become a haven for welfare recipients and with Oblama in the White House the numbers will triple. Take a look at the free lunches at KMS and Vernon Elementary.

I have to agree with Tally, I'm appalled that when history has just been made, this paper chooses to ignore it. We the people have a new president and you don’t even as much as put a mention on the front page. How very sad! That PROVES just how out of touch with the real world this area is.

I think this says it all. We want our Schools BACK! We want the teachers to TEACH! When a parent calls for a conference, no longer can it be that the teacher tells a student, I don't have time for this. We can't waste money, letting someone cut the grass at the Football field, because the Principal thinks this will help her with the new Superintendent. No longer can a Teacher be allowed to call the shots at a school. It's time for a change. Thank God it's coming.

It is very sad that the New President could not make your paper on the local area. Remember America has spoken. I am a native of this county and it seems that the mentality of backwoods remain. Good Luck with Cook Vernon your schools suffer now hold on.
