CHIPLEY — Kate M. Smith Principal Lesa Burdeshaw summed up her presentation to the school board in one sentence on Monday.

“We’re getting a new school and we’re excited,” Burdeshaw said.

She presented “FCAT in the Hat,” her Power Point presentation on the elementary schools achievements this year.

The elementary school recently completed its third assessment, and Math and Reading scores were up, Burdeshaw said. “Reading scores are going up steadily.”

There was a slight drop in 4th grade Math scores, but the teachers are working to improve the scores.

The school has also maintained a music program, and the science lab is “fantastic,” the principal said.

“The kids are excited, and they are doing lots of hands-on learning,” Burdeshaw said. “We’ve seen the Science scores skyrocket.”
