School Board discusses bus driver safety education

BONIFAY — Holmes County District School Board members discussed on Monday increasing bus driver safety education to biannual instead of annually.

School Board member Jason Motley initiated the discussion of bus safety by asking for the curriculum involved in the annual bus driver workshops.

Superintendent Eddie Dixon said it included CPR training, conflict resolution, the referral process, etc.

“I just want to make sure that our bus drivers are being educated in how to deal with confrontations, much like the one bus driver had to face in Midland City,” said Motley. “We need to get a little proactive until the state gives us instructions on what to do. Our bus drivers aren’t getting what they need and they need it at least twice a year with possible discussion and input from the drivers.”

Dixon said that he would look into what was required to get something like that set up.

“We do have certain state requirements that must be followed by state but it wouldn’t hurt to expand that training to be done twice a year,” said Dixon.

Resident and president of the Bethlehem Schools PTO Tamra Kriser was present to ask the board about the progress of Bethlehem High School’s upcoming art and music classes once again.
