VERNON — VHS celebrated Literacy Week and held their annual Language and Literature Festival Jan. 14-18.
The entire week was a smashing success. The VHS English Department kicked things off with a Literacy Bash Friday night, Jan. 11. Students, parents, teachers, and local vendors from colleges came out to celebrate Literacy.
Students and their parents had the opportunity to talk to local college representatives, a financial aid advisor, and Brian Barnes from the College Board. While attending, guests also had the opportunity to challenge some of their favorite teachers to board games such as Bananagrams, Apples to Apples, Words with Friends, and more.
Drawings for new books were held throughout the night, with over $300 worth of books being placed into the hands of VHS students. Gary Coleman won the grand prize drawing for a West Point Stevens quilt. An Scholastic Book Fair was also set up for students and parents to purchase items of their choice. VHS was pleased to be able to feed parents and students who attended. This was a terrific start to Literacy Week.
