Lightning, severe weather program planned; contest winner to be honored

PONCE DE LEON – The Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) will host an event to recognize Alexis Taylor at Ponce de Leon Elementary School as the Severe Weather Awareness Week poster contest winner for FDEM Region One. The event will  be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, at the elementary school, located at 1473 Ammons Road.

FDEM Director Bryan Koon, Volunteer Florida CEO Chester Spellman, FDEM meteorologists, the American Red Cross and the National Weather Service will be present.

Students will be actively engaged with games and tips on how to be prepared for a disaster. While at the school, awards will be given to the winning student and her teacher. Media is welcome and photo opportunities will be available.


When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors

When you hear thunder roar immediately seek shelter in a substantial building or hard-topped metal vehicle. Remember, lightning can strike as far away as 10 miles from the thunderstorm.
