Fatal wreck north of Ponce de Leon
On May 10, Casey L. Allen, 17, of Geneva, Ala., was killed in an automobile accident on County Road 185, approximately 17 miles north of Ponce de Leon.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol report, Jonothan A. Mclean, 20, of Westville was driving a Ford Escort northbound when the tread cap came loose from the left rear tire, striking the vehicle’s undercarriage. Mclean applied the brakes causing the Escort to begin rotating clockwise. The vehicle continued to rotate, traveled onto the east side of the road and into a ditch and rolled over several times before stopping.
Three passengers, including Allen, were ejected from the vehicle as it rolled over. They were not wearing seat belts. Steven J. Rodriguez, 15, of Ponce de Leon was seriously injured. Sarah M. Wood, 21, of Ponce de Leon was critically injured.
Mclean remained inside the vehicle during the crash. He was wearing a seat belt and received minor injuries. All were transported to Wiregrass Hospital in Geneva.
