Effort underway to legalize medical marijuana in Florida

A group of Floridians organized as People United for Medical Marijuana (PUFMM) has begun an effort to put a medical marijuana initiative on the November 2010 ballot, according to a report from PUFFM. The group needs some 687,000 valid signatures of registered voters in the next nine months to qualify.

The group is not affiliated with any national organization and says it needs $5 million for the signature gathering drive and the election campaign. Unlike more traditional initiative campaigns, PUFMM is relying heavily on Internet-based activism. The group's Facebook page already has 4,800 members, and PUFMM is counting on cascading new memberships to gather what it hopes is 1.2 million signatures, providing a very comfortable cushion at validation time. PUFMM is also hoping for each signatory to kick in $5. That way, the group could meet its self-imposed budget goal.

"Patients need a safe, affordable and effective medication. We hope Florida will lead the nation in marijuana research to further its uses as a medicine," PUFMM head Kim Russell, whose father suffers from Parkinson's Disease, told the Cape Coral Daily Breeze."There is absolute support, we just have to get everyone organized," she said, citing favorable national polling data.

If approved, the petition would create a constitutional amendment that reads as follows:

"(a) No person shall be deprived of life, liberty or property or otherwise penalized for the cultivation, purchase, use or possession of marijuana in connection with the treatment of Alzheimer's, cachexia, cancer, chronic pain, chronic nervous system disorders, Crohn's disease, epilepsy and other seizure disorders, glaucoma, HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, diseases causing muscle spasticity, or other diseases and conditions when recommended by a physician.

"(b) This section shall be self-executing. The legislature, however, may provide by general law for the voluntary registration of persons intending to exercise their rights hereunder and for the regulation of the distribution and sale of marijuana to persons intending to exercise their rights hereunder.

"(c) Nothing herein, however, shall be construed so as to prevent the legislature from enacting laws penalizing the operation of motor vehicles, boats, watercraft or aircraft while under the influence of marijuana or regulating the use of marijuana by minors. Similarly, all laws in effect at the time of adoption of this section penalizing the operation of motor vehicles, boats, watercraft or aircraft while under the influence of marijuana or regulating the use of marijuana by minors shall remain in force."

The proposed amendment does not create limits on the number of plants or the amount of usable marijuana patients may possess. It appears to leave that up to the legislature. In fact, PUFMM would prefer that the legislature just went ahead and passed a medical marijuana bill and is asking people to write to their representatives in the hope of achieving just that. "We are hoping they will submit a bill rather than a ballot initiative," Russell said. "The Internet is a huge resource for us."

While the effort is just a week old, it has already been denounced by the Florida Sheriff's Association and by Bill Janes, director of Florida's Office of Drug Control. "When we increase the availability of marijuana we increase the availability for young people," Janes said. "What this petition doesn't address is how the marijuana will be controlled. Will we just allow random growing of marijuana?"

Remember. The MIND ALTERING SUBSTANCE caffeine is more dangerous than marijuana. IBUPROFEN kills 7,600 people a year. Marijuana kills 0. The CATHOLIC CHURCH supports Medical Marijuana according to the Pope's guide on drugs. As with MANY other religions, NONE of the top 40 religions oppose medical marijuana. Legalizing Medical Marijuana is the easiest choice you will ever make. So make it happen! Email me if you wanna know more! gieseghj at gmail. com

Jeanna, I must say what you speak is truth but very rudely put. Honestly, religion is just to control the masses but so is the government. So disputing about how religion is nonsense. But I do have to add that Marijuana is a plant and God made the earth and everything on this Earth. So there for God put marijuana on the planet just as he has done with countless plants that do worse for you than Marijuana. But most if not all can be used for medical purposes. Remember Medicine men and Shamans and Elders of the Indian tribes? They used these plants for all sorts of reasons. Some Indians used to smoke Marijuana the night before they went to war, for example. Mom is ill informed and seems illiterate in many many ways. But all she needs to do is open her mind to the facts. That's all I ask from today's community.

Mom. Not only are you ill informed, but your grammatical skills leave much to be desired. I wounder what kind of illiterate, misinformed, bible-thumping hypocrite you are raising? Your belief that God gives you more rights, to impose your will upon others, is laughable. But then, that's what the whole purpose of religion is, isn't it? To control the masses. And, honey, from where I sit, you are truly one of the sheep, your posts reading like all the other baa-baaing sheep from the church.

We are not trying to corrupt your kids in anyway what so ever. Your kids will experiment on their own just like 98 percent of out current adults have done. But better parenting would be to teach your kids the truth bout certain things so in case they do experiment they know what to expect, what to look for, and what to do in case something goes awry.

The legalization of Marijuana in general would help out America's economy more than most realize. Before you reply so rudely like you have in the past, I would like you to stop and open your mind to the idea. For several reasons. 1st Your best friend or neighbor or priest or family member is possibly a doper as you call them. 2nd Any person who takes Tylenol or aspirin or anything like the before mentioned is a doper as you call them. 3rd God doesn't like judgmental people. If you truly believe in the bible then you know you should not judge until you can honestly judge yourself. And ma'am, you can't honestly judge yourself. You are one of the fore mentioned self-righteous, hypocritical idiots I was talking about. As for me. I'm a kind, open minded person who can be self-righteous, hypocritical idiot and I know it. And I admit it. I have a lot of faults but if there is a god, I know he loves me for who I am and the better person I will become. Again, I am not posting to offend anyone nor Am I here to be rude. I am her simply to voice my opinion and to hope others will listen and be encouraged to open their mind even the slightest of ways.

I am not posting to offend anyone nor Am I here to be rude. I am her simply to voice my opinion and to hope others will listen and be encouraged to open their mind even the slightest of ways. Dear mom, I am on the verge of being 21 and have already done enough to fill my curiosity. And jumping into the world of dopers I have found myself disgusted with self-righteous, hypocritical idiots who only agree to disagree with society. Yes, you are right about people faking it to get Prescriptions. I've seen it with my own eyes. It's disgraceful. I detest the thought of my future children will grow up around the idea of lying, stealing, and doing hard drugs. But I'm more worried about raising kids with adults so closed minded. Also, you really shouldn't judge anyone but yourself. How can you call yourself a loyal servant of the Lord when you judge his children? Your brothers and sisters? I love the fact that we have freedom to do most things. In my opinion one freedom that needs working on is our first amendment. I honestly don't understand why adults don't have the freedom to choose to wear their seat belt, smoke pot, we are American adults. It's why we formed America in the first place, does anyone remember why we were in the Revolutionary war in the first place anymore?

dont smoke anymore My association at church bears the ten commandments and hold them dearly and would not let such things get in the way of GOD the principles are applied without short cuts.

Mom, I smoked pot on and off for most of my life. I am 47 years old now and don't do smoke it anymore. I don't know of the first person that has ever been addicted to pot. You would be suprised at the people that you know personaly that do smoke pot. Next time you go to church just look to your left and right, you are probably sitting next to a doper as you call them. I know a lot of upstanding citizens that smoke pot but not a lot of people know it. I am pretty sure when you get in bad enough pain you will take some kind of pain killer for it. When you do just think it might be a derivitive of cocaine. Oh, but I am sure you think that would be different. Wrong answer, that makes you one of us, a doper. And to Cinderella, I have been all over Europe and The Netherlands is the only country in Europe that I have smoked mariuana in legaly.

my medicine cabinet has vitamins, herbs and tea. i don't need any medicine. but some people do. as people die of aids, cancer or other horrible diseases they need to smoke marijuana and they deserve that right. they deserve to have an appetite and hold down a bite of food to alleviate the suffering they are already going through.

alli - Aug 09, 2009 08:02:43 PM Remove Comment

actually i am not a doper. i am a nurse who believes that people should have access to what makes them feel better. one person's poison is another man's medicine. i also have a friend dying of stage 4 cancer that has spread to her lymph nodes and weed helps her eat. i am an educated woman with a mind that knows how to think logically. marijuana is medicine. and it will be legal and thank god for that. so wake up and smell the coffee, or the pot.

my kids are fully educated but the point seems to be why should they smell that yet regular smoke is soo baadd. All dopers fighting for a right, so sad.

hate to tell you all but i dont use any of that trash mentioned,, i dont need a excuse to get what i want wether precription or not, sorry if the truth hurts. Have you checked your medicine cabinet? This is just a lame excuse to legalize dope, soo when it gets rejectED Ha ha ha

and if your kids are going to do drugs they are going to do drugs. fighting to keep pot illegal is just going to force your kid to buy it from some shady dealer. what's next? don't talk about sex and keep condoms illegal too? these are facts of life. how about just raising a kid with a head on their shoulders so that they make wise and educated decisions. stop trying to scare them and keep them hidden from the realities of what is in this world. if you are truly afraid of pot you have a lot to learn. pot is a minor thing is this world of harsh chemicals. you should be more afraid of the parties that kids go to now where they all bring a prescription bottle from home and dump it in a bowl and then take some random pill such as oxycontin. at least pot is straightforward. we know the effects of it and it is not death or overdose. maybe they will get the munchies.

the fact is, this is a seed that is planted into the ground which grows into a plant. it was given to us by God to be used as a medicine. so what you get a buzz. it is safer than any pill that is made synthetically by man in a lab. people are afraid of pot because it actually opens the mind and allows people to think outside of the box. these people are against it until one of their loved ones gets cancer or aids and needs pot just to keep a bite of food down. people are such hipocrits. look at european countries where drugs are legal. they are so much more educated and peaceful than our country. wake up out of your dream world.

To mom, How painfully ignorant you are on the facts. Step off your soap box for a minute and research what you say. Using your logic, EVERYONE that gets a prescription is a doper, an enabler, and trash that sucks our tax money from our pocket, EVERYONE. This topic is about legalizing marijuana for MEDICAL USE, not to put it in the candy bar rack at the local Tom Thumb. Your eye's are NOT open to reality lady. Are the local drug stores a paved road for dopers? Prescription drugs today do far more damage and cost taxpayers a bundle but we don't hear you complaining about that! Why not? Do you take a prescription for any medical issue? If you do, then YOU are a self righteous hypocrite. Stop taking your statins for your cholesterol, your insulin for your diabetes, or your rogain for that bald patch on the back of your head, because if you use them, according to you, you're a doper and an enabler and trash that sucks up our tax dollars. I'll say it again, WAKE UP! There is no logical reason to keep this from being legal with a prescription!

Some of you people would be shocked to learn the number of Orange growers in this state that have subsidized their income by growing marijuana out in the middle of their groves. They've been doing it for decades. They're good 'ole southern boys that did what they had to do to keep on top of things. It would be a benefit to the entire state if MM were to be legalized.
