VERNON — Madisen Hawes was one of only 20 students to receive recognition from Florida State Senator Don Gaetz on her perfect score on the Florida's Comprehensive Assessment Test.
Hawes landed a perfect score in Reading. She is an eighth grader at Vernon Middle School.
“For Math I had to put in a lot of hard work,” said Hawes. “Reading has been a lot better. My favorite thing is reading.”
Hawes said she especially likes reading fiction with plenty of action and adventure. The series she’s interested in at the moment is the May Bird by Jodi Lynn Anderson.
“It helps to read a lot,” said Hawes. “Then when you get to the tests it becomes easier to read the sections quickly and understand the questions for the right answers.”
She said that her mother and teachers were her biggest help in achieving such good grades.
“My mom and teachers help me stay focused,” said Hawes. “My favorite teacher is my Reading teacher, Mr. Middlebrooks.”
She said she also had reading competitions between her and her siblings, so reading “is big in the family.”
Hawes mother, Connie Hawes, said that Hawes had been involved and winning spelling bees since she was in the second grade.
“She loves school and she’s a very happy person,” said Connie Hawes. “Everyday she describes as ‘the best day ever.’”
Hawes said she was torn between wanting to be a meteorologist, a pediatrician or a singer when she grows up.
“Usually she seems rather shy, but not when it comes to singing,” said Hawes’ mother. “She’s also very creative. When she was running in the elections for BETA her slogan was ‘Got Madison? It does the student body good.’”
Hawes said she still wasn’t sure what college she was going to yet, but she was excited at the prospect of continuing her education in any field she chose.
