The bids ranged from $558,000 to $821,000, Baker said.

Mayor Michelle Cook said the city Christmas parade was a success. “We had a great turnout for the parade, and a lot of participation.” The Grand Marshal will be “honorary citizen of Vernon” Brent Heard, and he was honored following the parade.

The council also approved advertising for at least five volunteers for a city Recreation Board, and appointed Cook to serve as the city recreation coordinator. “She will meet with the Recreation Board and be the go-between for the council and the board,” board chairwoman Tina Sloan said.

In other business, the council approved of the Vernon High School FFA using the Community Center for the Christmas Wild Game Dinner on Dec. 11; approved the fire department’s use of turkey shoot funds to help a needy family in Vernon; approved putting in electrical service for the fire department’s Portable Cascade Unit; and approved spending $500 on appreciation gifts for the volunteer firemen.
