Vernon city employees to get Christmas bonuses

VERNON — The Vernon City Council approved Christmas bonuses for city employees Monday night at the November council meeting.

Council chairwoman Tina Sloan said that last year the employees received a $200 bonus, but this year she would like to see that increased.

“I would like to see them get $500,” Sloan said. “That was the same thing I wanted last year.” She said the council last year waited on approving the bonuses and the employees wound up only getting $200.

Council member Byron Biddle asked if the topic could be tabled until the next workshop.

“We won’t have time to get them to them by Christmas if we wait,” Sloan said.

Biddle made a motion that employees receive a $300 Christmas bonus. Sloan asked if the city’s two supervisors could get $500 bonuses, since they had not received raises this year, and Biddle amended his motion. The bonuses were approved unanimously.

City Clerk Dian Hendrix also informed the council that the Vernon Fire Department security system was in need of an upgrade, and requested approval for $3,000 for the improvements. “We bought a new computer for the system, but it was so old it didn’t work with the new computer.”
