VERNON — The Vernon City Council approved Christmas bonuses for city employees Monday night at the November council meeting.
Council chairwoman Tina Sloan said that last year the employees received a $200 bonus, but this year she would like to see that increased.
“I would like to see them get $500,” Sloan said. “That was the same thing I wanted last year.” She said the council last year waited on approving the bonuses and the employees wound up only getting $200.
Council member Byron Biddle asked if the topic could be tabled until the next workshop.
“We won’t have time to get them to them by Christmas if we wait,” Sloan said.
Biddle made a motion that employees receive a $300 Christmas bonus. Sloan asked if the city’s two supervisors could get $500 bonuses, since they had not received raises this year, and Biddle amended his motion. The bonuses were approved unanimously.
City Clerk Dian Hendrix also informed the council that the Vernon Fire Department security system was in need of an upgrade, and requested approval for $3,000 for the improvements. “We bought a new computer for the system, but it was so old it didn’t work with the new computer.”
The council approved the request.
Vernon resident Bill Dobbins asked the council to look into collecting Department of Transportation contingency funds on the Highway 79 bridge project, which has gone nearly a year over schedule.
“I think there are funds there that the city can recoup from the DOT, because of the construction company being behind schedule. There are fines and contingency funds that will just go back to the DOT.”
The council also learned that the DOT’s check for the old Washington County Canning Center building had been received by the city. The property was purchased from the city for $158,500 and the city is in the process of getting the equipment moved out of the canning center and into storage.
Also, Vernon’s annual Christmas Parade will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec.8.
The Grand Marshal will be “honorary citizen of Vernon” Brent Heard.
Line-up will be held at 12:30 p.m. at the track behind City Hall. Anyone wishing to be in the parade should contact City Hall at 535-2444.
Refreshments will be served in the Community Center and Santa Claus is scheduled to make an appearance as well.
